Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

So about four days ago my apartment was broken into. I was at a friend's house playing video games and while I was gone someone or some people peeled the bars off my bedroom window and snuck in. While inside my apt they relieved me of my laptop, digital camera, xbox 360, and all my dvds and games, a backpack, and various other things. I think they may have also walked away with a spare key to my car leaving me wary of keeping my car at my house.

While I don't attach much value to things I do put a high premium to the feeling of security I have when in my home. I have anxiety attacks a lot and being at home seems to help calm me down. Or did anyways. Since the break-in I've just felt so on edge and vulnerable. It's also made me highly suspicious of everyone. I'm always listening to my neighbors conversations to see if they're talking about what happened or maybe they'll slip up and give away some detail only the burglars could know.

I know being suspicious of one's neighbors is crappy but from what my land lord, the police, and all my friends that I've told about the incident say it was most likely done by someone who either currently or previously lived in the apartments. They knew exactly how the bars came off and the easiest way to slip in.

It's been a rough week. To top things off two days after the break in I got chased by some punks in a Mitsubishi and my girlfriend left for New York and I won't see her again for two or three months.

Well Fixers I hope your summer has been treating you better. It's funny up until this happened I'd been reflecting on how much I love Albuquerque and how happy I am to have lived here. I still think it's a wonderful city even if some of its citizens suck.

Damn this sucks and I'm sorry to hear it. That feeling of being totally vulnerable in one's own house takes awhile to get over. When I was burglarized in Chicago, the thieves actually made off with some of my clothes (including a swimsuit!?!) but by far the worst thing was my 2 missing kitties. Their disappearance was the most devastating until I found them 8 hours later still huddled behind the stove.

Hang in there. It'll get better.

Can your landlord fix the bars? That seems like a key security failure.

We had things stolen while camping, it was as though they had shopped for what they needed, taking my favorite shirt, a well seasoned cast iron frying pan, old sleeping bag, some other clothes. They left the good sleeping bag , thermarests, camping chairs.
I felt completely creeped out and stayed up all night sure they would return. They didn't.

I agree with Chantal, it will get better.

That really sucks and I am so sorry you had to go through that!

I agree with the others - it will get better.
