Bad Art?

This morning I'm watching the news, and there's a lot of fretting about Ben Stiller's new movie, Tropical Thunder. And do you know why? Because of the liberal use of the word "retard".

Now, as a person that works with adults with disabilities (most of them mental), yeah, using the term "retard" to describe how dumb things are is as bad as using the term "gay". (Which frankly, if you're still calling things "gay", grow up. You sound like a fourth grader.) So yes, I have pretty much quit using "retarded" as a way of describing things that are lame. Does that mean I'm the "retard" police, no. I just am more sensitive to using the term.

All that being said, THAT is why they are boycotting the movie.

Never mind the fact that Robert Downy Jr. is in BLACK FACE for the whole damn movie. No, that's not offensive at all. They cast a white man in a role (cause really folks, there aren't enough roles for white men out there in the movies) that very easily could have cast a black man. (And might have actually made the movie funny.)

Christ on a cracker with a pogo stick, people. I'm not saying that words aren't hurtful and don't cause permanent damage, cause they do. (Apparently they are already selling shirts online with a quote from the movie, "Don't go full retarded.") But I'm thinking that the blatant racism would be considered even more offensive. Or are we so racist as a society that we just overlook this kind of thing all together? I mean, why don't they just call Downy's character "Old Jim"???

I mean, am I the only one that is thinking this way?

But I'm not for censorship. I believe whatever idiot out there should be able to say what they want and create the "art" they want, and I don't have to go see it. I also believe whoever should be able to stand outside the movie theater and protest whatever they want. But I do think if you're going to protest, you should protest the fact that the whole damn thing is just "bad" art.

So my opinion, don't go see it. It looks like a piece of crap anyhow.
