If Orion is raising himself up off the eastern dawn horizon (and indeed he is), can football season be far behind? And CAN I WATCH THE LOBOS on my tv set this year? I have been scanning the AbqJournal Sports section hoping they would once and for all clarify this all important issue (esp. since LOBO tix seem a bit pricey this year-yes, another thing that will cost more this fall esp. the Texas A&M game)...but no articles as yet.

So, I call the man listed in the AbqJournal as SPORTS,Sam Aselstine (823-3918), who seemed a little bored by my question (we've written dozens of article on that, he says to me--But not THIS season,Sam...We're hungry for answers in-the-NOW about THIS season!)...

By the way if you don't know (then you probably don't care or you are a LOBO Season Ticket holder), it used to be that local tv station KRQE handled all local LOBO games (and often carried the 'away games' too) with great aplumb but in the last few years THE MOUNTAIN (MTN network) has complicated the issue by apparently paying more moolah to the big cheeses at UNM or by some deal with the Mountain West Conference...At any rate, the cable crew at COMCAST has carried the games for the Mtn. but not Dish nor Directv...So for the past several years, FREE TV watchers or anyone NOT paying into Comcast, have just been out of luck.

So THIS YEAR straight from SPORTS,Sam Aselstine (823-3918) here's the bottomline...This LOBO SEASON which has its opener on AUG. 30th vs. TCU at 4 p.m., you can either BE THERE or be square at home and watch the game on ... yes, The Mountain (MTN) as seen on Comcast and this year ON DIRECTV but NOT on the Dish Network.

So there you have it and our thanks to AbqJournal SPORTS guy, Sam Aselstine.

The fury over the absence of Lobo Football and Basketball on free TV has been raging ever since the MWC launched "The Mountain" sports channel. The league office has repeatedly screwed the pooch over TV coverage, and fans from every single league school have been up in arms over the previous monopoly comcast had. With the deal to put TheMtn on DirecTV, it has improved things a tiny little bit, only in that you no longer have to have comcast or go without, but.... We all wonder why the hell we can't watch at least the road games without having to fork over somewhere in the vacinity of $80 a month.

Even bigtime football schools are screwing their fans over with this kind of thing. Last season you couldn't get the Big 10 network on the local cable provider in Columbus OH(home of Ohio State U) or Happy Valley PA (home of Penn State U). I think they've managed to get it this season.

The Lobos are going to start hemorrhaging fans if they don't make it easier to see games. I can't remember the last time I was able to get either Football or Basketball Lobo games at home (Dish Network.) I realize that the MTN network was a result of the conference and not the school itself but UNM really ought to be pressuring Dish and Directv to add it to an affordable package.

The UNM athletics website indicates that the Versus channel is going to be carrying a few of the games, but it still looks like you have to endure the crappiness that is The Mountain to catch the remainder.

It's a travesty. I became a Lobo fan primarily through watching those games on channel 13. That, and they fire Mike Roberts. And then they complain when ticket sales are down. Could it have something to do with making decisions that hinder growth of the fan base?

It's pretty ridiculous to not even be able to watch a local university game on a local station. I know myself and many of my friends have been salty about this fact for a good while now.

JUST in from FRESHCHAOS.com...As a longtime fans of the Fighting Irish, we have wondered how long can the networks keep showing almost ALL of the ND games on autumn weekends when the team just absolutely BLOWS...Here is one active link to this great parody originally seen on SNL last season. GO IRISH. This parody was taken off YouTube but can still be seen on this and several other websites:->

Notre Dame Football on Saturday Night Live.

Okay gang, here's a little clarification.

Our first 3 games are all going to be nationally televised with the first 2 on the VERSUS network (which most people have on a basic cable or satellite tier) and the third one on CBS College Sports (which is available on almost all expanded cable and satellite plans).

The road games at Tulsa and New Mexico State don't have a TV broadcast plan yet and since they're road games, UNM does not have a say into getting coverage for those games.

The remainder of our games, except for a Thursday night CBS College Sports game at Air Force, will be on The Mtn. The Mtn. is available on the extended digital cable on Comcast and on an extra tier of satellite on DirecTV nationwide. The Dish Network has refused to carry it so far.

While it's true that you can't use the rabbit ears to watch Lobo athletics any more, if you really want to see the games, the new TV deal is offering you more coverage and more detailed coverage (and frankly, higher quality coverage) than we've ever had before in the history of our program.

I think if you watch The Mtn. for any period of time, you'll see the quality of coverage they give to each program in the conference.

If you have any other questions about this stuff, drop me a line anytime!

OK I thought I was finally all set to watch LOBO games this year with the good news that the Mtn will be on Directv...How stupid I feel to learn, that I have to pay even more to Directv than I already do to ACCESS the precious Mtn. Network...Got two cheapo seats for the home opener and hope the weather's gonna be fallish and beautiful this Saturday LIVE. GO LOBOS.
