Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I'm just back from the gun show at the State Fair, ran by silverspurgunshows.com. You can definitely tell it's not California. One dealer was selling an AUG (for a low price of $2100). Not all differences play into my hands, however. In particular, I wanted to get a Kel-Tec SU-16CA, because I might need to retrn to California in the future and the fascist government there prohibits everything sensible. But since New Mexico's government is not as oppressive, AR-15 dominates the market above the SKS/AK/Mini-14, and as a result, SU-16 is nowhere to be found. Internet to the rescue, I guess.

The show continues tomorrow.

Woot! I forgot about that show (got a new camera today and it's been getting all my attention). that Kel-Tec SU-16CA looks like a dandy little rifle and I'd love to shoot one. Have you checked out the Kel-Tec RBF bullpup 7.62mm? (I'm not a big fan of the 5.56 in a gunfight).

My $.02 for the AR-15 types being so popular is the straight recoil design keeps your sights closer on target shot after shot much better than more traditional types like the Mini-14/FN FAL. AUG, FAMAS, SA-80 types are very easy to stay on target with over many shots too, but I don't like their small calibers.

Thanks for the post and safe travels in California!

I don't think RFB is available yet, and in any case it's not legal for California due to the bullpup layout.

Are these guns you are after for hunting or just to collect?

Horses were really nice, but unfortunately I do not understand anything about them.

not knowing much of anything about guns, i had to start googling the terminology.
bullpup is an interesting if not a bit ugly.
why is that configuration illegal in CA? i mean, why would the arrangement of the magazine in relation to the trigger really matter or is it just political shorthand for "assault rifle"?

When you say New Mexico is not as oppressive, what is it about New Mexico laws? I guess I don't know much about the gun laws here.

I am not familiar with the CCW situation in NM, or for that matter, in CA. But from the narrowly selfish perspective, the so-called "assault weapon ban" in California is my biggest gripe, with general governance issues following.

The ban is one of the worst pieces of legislation I've read in my life. It is made intentionally convoluted to make its ramifications difficult to discern (more about it later), which I consider legislative fraud. Parts of it were blatantly unconstitutional and were overturned (thus, Saiga became legal again -- as long it's the version without a pistol grip). It, together with other strange laws, creates a climate of fear, sustained by the arbitrary enforcement. Nobdy knows what's legal and what's not, except officers of the government, which is the very definition of police state. I actually have bought SU-16CA, but the store owner refused to release the rifle when he found that the barrel is threaded on it, so I opted for a refund. My attorney, and a consulting attorney, agreed that it was legal. But the fear in which the shop owner lives just does not allow him to act upon the laws. Instead, he opted to call CA DOJ and ask for a permission (which they, of cours, ignored -- it's not their function to interpret laws on request). He knows about DOJ raiding other stores, so he has to respect the force, not the law.

Another great example of what is wrong with California is the ban on 50-cal rifles. It's a kind of weapon which has no practical purpose and in the same time presents virtually no danger to public, so the question of freedom comes to the forefront. When someone buys one, he/she makes a statement, as with a Harley bike. Personally, I have no desire to own one... but it insults me when government uses false pretenses and fearmongering to curtail my freedom this way. Similarly, I have plenty fluorescent bulbs throughout my house (I would've had the majority if moisture-resistant bulbs came to market), but I strongly oppose any ban on incandescent lightning.

The gun laws in New Mexico are pretty easy. If you're not a felon, you may own a gun; if you are a felon, you may not.

If you carry a gun in public, it can't be concealed if it's loaded; if it's unloaded you may conceal it. If you're in your house (owned or rented), on your property, on your means of conveyance (car, truck, bike, horse, etc...) you may carry your gun loaded, unloaded, concealed or in the open (I've seen women riding horses in the Bosque with revolvers on their hips); basically anyway you want.

If you have a Concealed Handgun License, you can carry your gun loaded and concealed anywhere except places that sell alcohol for consumption on premises, hospitals, buses and UNM (I'm not sure about grade schools).

One of the many things I love about NM is the gun laws. Illinois, where I came from, basically doesn't have a Second Amendment. Having a gun in the passenger part of your car is a felony, as is carrying one. In an area of 9 million people there isn't one place to shoot a high power rifle.

I was back there last week and wish I had a gun when a punk threatened to crack my skull while brandishing a metal baseball bat. (I was too close to his car for him.) If you're not allowed to defend yourself you're not a free person. A few years ago the politicians talked about hiring 100,000 new cops. Heck, an honest armed citizen is society's free cop.
