I said goodbye to an old friend today. My dog. My first dog as an adult. Romeo Tyson D'Arco. He was a lover and a fighter. A lot like me. He was old and gained a little weight and turned a little gray... a lot like me. I'm gonna miss him.

I first met Romeo in a box behind Scalo (he was in the box, not me at that time). I could not resist him. I resided on a few acres in the mountains at the time so we had plenty of room to stretch. His first childhood animal buddy was a goat. Buster. He spent the rest of his life eating grass & climbing on top of things! Romeo. Well, the goat too I suppose. I didn't miss the goat so much after denting the hood of my sports car at the time. I left the car & the goat to the girlfriend at the time... in the settlement.

Romeo was a friend to man and beast. Not so much to little boys. Many knew Romeo from parties, walks in the park, or alerting the neighbors to their presence as they ran down the street with what burglary booty they could carry on a bicycle.

Romeo was a smart little cattle dog. He learned a lot of tricks. He would spin, shake, round up chickens, dance, roll over, toss a biscuit from his nose into the air and catch it in his mouth, just to name a few. I always thought he should be in movies. He loved to eat. He loved to sleep. He occasionally swam. He occasionally rolled around in cow pies. He once peed on a Canadian's tackle box. Actually, he once peed on a girl's leg at a party! Not sure how he knew she hadn't returned my call for a date.

He recently developed Degenerative Disc Disorder, or something like that. We thought it was Hip Dysplasia, common in old cow dogs. His limp prompted pills, his stumble prompted a vet. He never left the Bolton Animal Hospital. A visit became a night became a weekend became Euthanasia. The other pets never got to say goodbye. They are also sad & confused. He is survived by Sirius the Dog Star, Domino the Kitten, Little Gray Being the old wise Cat, and us stupid humans. Romeo was a native of Albuquerque.

I was there to hold his paw. He smiled. I know all dogs go to heaven. Although sick inside we toasted him at Scalo and reminisced with tears in our eyes. He was a silly little fella. I'm gonna miss him. This Martini is for you.

Loosing a friend who only ever gave you unconditional love is one of the worst losses.
He's free of pain now. Big Hugs.

So sorry Mike! :-(

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ~Roger Caras
