Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

The Pack travels through these acequias and ditches every day.
And every day we appreciate the quality of life that living in Albuquerque has brought us.

The ditches are thing I really miss about living in the valley. They are such a great trail, wildlife corridor and open space.
The MRGCD has been on a program called ditches with trails. I think it may be stalled right now, but the idea was to add some signage and work out the legal issues with people being the ditch. Technicaly we are not supposed to be on the ditch, but you know how that works.
You and your doggies are very lucky.

What a city. Tons of variety when you think about it. In my limited travels I haven't seen many cities with this much to offer. With every mood that strikes, Albuquerque has something for it. What a place. And variety is the spice of life.

I love Albuquerque in the fall. Walking the acequias is so peaceful, and one of the things I miss most.

The MRGCD formally severed its ties with Ditches with Trails, so for now, walking on the ditches is still trespassing, though the Board said they weren't going to go after recreational users. It's one of the great tragedies of this last year, as far as I'm concerned. I really thought the idea of formally opening the ditches to recreational use would have such a great thing for Albuquerque. If you agree, drop the MRGCD a note saying so. I am griped about it among other reasons because I can't take my Girl Scout troop out for a walk on the ditch next to our meeting place.

But!! Corrales is working on a master trails plan, and the MRGCD said they were willing to open recreation up on a case-by-case basis so someday it may be legal.... in Corrales... to enjoy heavenly autumn days on the acequias legally.

One other thought-- since the water got turned off, this is a great time to go look at animal tracks in the mud of the ditches. We've been seeing raccoon and coyote tracks, among others. I think they go down and catch the little crawdads that didn't make it back to the river.
