I had my first persimmon yesterday. Where have they been all my life? Mike and I went to the Farmer's Market in Roseville, CA and we saw tables and tables of them - all bright orange - looking delightful.
Mike had them before, so we selected some from the piles on the tables. We had them with a dinner of spinach ravs with pesto, broccoli with red peppers and sliced avocados. It was so wonderful - it was a grand finish to a wonderful day.
I really can't get over all the fresh produce here in California. The market contains several hundred vendors with every fruit, vegetable, legume, coconuts - you name it - it's there. Of course, I saw some things I didn't know what they were! The prices are really good too - I got a pound of cream potatoes for $1; persimmons were .75 a pound; red peppers (huge) were two for .75. It is truly amazing the see the quantity of food down the aisles - vendors shouting prices and holding out bags for you. Some offer samples - very wise people - once you have a taste of a yellow melon, you have to have it.
It's a jovial atmosphere and always a delight to go to the market for veggies and fruit. It's more like an adventure than a grocery store visit.
