Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

The February issue of Albuquerque the Magazine will feature love letters. I may have sort of promised to contribute one. But I'm feeling blocked (this may have something to do with being stuck at home, in my bathrobe, fighting off a cold. I'm not feeling terribly frisky).

So in the spirit of the Exquisite Corpse group, and our earlier Nob Hill love fest/contest, I'm hoping our readers will step in with a joint mash note to Albuquerque. I'll start with the greeting, and you contribute the next lines through comments (make sure you check out what others have written first). And just to sweeten the deal, one contributor, chosen at random, will receive a bottle of fancy pink champagne and tub time for 2 at Betty's Bath & Day Spa, perfect for sharing with your honey (or re-gifting early next week).

Note to Lexi: I really hope this is okay!

Let the love-fest begin....

Dear Albuquerque,

I think I've been in love with you from our first meeting. I protested, I fought, I tried to pull away. But you slowly reeled me in and now here I am hopelessly, utterly in love.

How did you do it? I've run from so many others more sweetly Fodor's-worthy. But you, with your gritty breath and gooey heart, transfixed me where others have failed.

I've loved you since I was 10 and we stopped overnight when my Mom drove the U-haul from Cali to Missouri. I stood on the motel toilet, nose to window screen, smelling your desert breath and listening to the mysterious moan of your coyote, a train singing counterpoint in the distance. I knew then that nothing would keep me from you..

"Not Even" the Spring and Fall dustwinds could sway my indefatigable lustiness for you, oh fair Duke City. I ogle your divers topographic features as if I were a Lobo Club member and you were a pom-poned co-ed cheerleader writhing in school-spirit ecstasy on the floor of the Pit.

The earthy aroma of the valley acequias as they flood the fields in June, the breathlessness of the mountains crest as we gaze across the sparkling city lights of a winter night, the warm grass beneath our toes combined with the mellow yellow of cottonwood leaves as we run barefoot through a park on an October eve ... all combine to draw me ever back to your breast, regardless of where I might wander.

Your glorious apache plume,
your lovely cherry sage,
your lavender stalks a-bloom,
your cottonwood trees a-sway.

North Valley, South Valley, Northeast Heights;
Nob Hill and Ridgecrest, too;
Foothill trails and biking paths;
just to name a few.

All that others fail to see,
this beauty that is Albuquerque,
and all that we have yet to know,
is parceled in your sunset's glow.

I don't know what happened after my first paragraph, darling. You know I'm not good at a computer and I must have pasted something accidentally that a previous user here at the library was using. I don't know how to erase it, but don't let this semi-erotic nonsense come between us. (Although I rather like the Apache plume poem).
As I was saying, I love you deeply and fervently, and I don't care how frisky you feel at the moment, I know I can fill the void in your life and you can fill the void in mine. And so for this upcoming Christmas season, I would like to propose that we...

let bygones be bygones. I want you to know that I’m sorry, but I had to leave you – but I came back because I realized I really wanted to be with you…I want to laugh, and live, gloriously giddy with the delight of being in your company, immersed in the indescribable beauty that you can show. Please let me be yours again, to care for each other and find the peace and happiness we both want and need.

Now please, my dearest Albuquerque, step into my abode and share a glass of Gruet champagne with me. Perhaps later, my little wildflower, we could frolic down to Nob Hill as the glowering red sun slips to its rest behind the backs of the Three Sisters. And never forget that...

The south of you (KAFB?) can rattle my windows.
