Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

For some reason I seem to be eating out for lunch again. I had a nice run of at-home middday meals going there (pleasant for me, pleasant for my pets). But now it's back out into the white tablecloth world of ABQ lunchtime dining. Here's where I've been going (and where I'd gladly return), arranged in rough order of expensiveness:

  • Dog House: Sure it's bad for you. But there's nothing quite like bonding with a good friend over a chile dog and the anticipation of 3 days of gastrointestinal weirdness. And it all tastes soooo good.
  • Griff's: Packed with servicemen and bikers (that's Harleys, not Schwinns), Griff's has the greasy cheeseburger, coke, fries thing down to an art.
  • Pastorero: This newish joint on the west side features amazing tacos al pastor, which are marinated pork-cilantro-pineapple yumminess. Plus a small but good selection of paletas. (Note: Pastorero is, in fact, part of a small chain. But the founder lives in Albuquerque, which in my book makes it local).
  • Relish: A friend and I met up at the Menaul location the other day (there's one downtown, too). She had the mozzarella salad and I had the Cubano. We both left happy.
  • The Grove: Truly, I never thought that I would EVER become addicted to a salad. I mean, seriously. But the Farmer's Salad is actually crave-worthy, and they often have them in the cold case, which cuts down on waiting time.

See my earlier post on (sort of) this subject.

Kitson - Go get a Tortilla Burger at Wimpy's on Mountain Road. You can get a medium combo - burger, fries and drink for 6.95! And the service is outstanding!!!

Cervantes' cheese enchilada plate is about $7... the red is to die for.
Grandma's K&I diner on Broadway... Eat a 1/4 Travis and you may need to take the afternoon off.

I was excited to hear about Pastorero but found their pastor tacos overcooked and a little tough. El Paisa on Bridge just past the river does a better job.

I"m addicted to the grilled Relleno plate (with green chile) at Richard's (Carlisle and Menaul in shopping center with Cost Plus) and their salsa is truly addictive. If they made their own chips (versus shaking out of a bag) I might just kill myself eating salsa and chips alone.

What happend to WilloBelly's on University between Lomas and Indian School? I thought they had great sandwiches, and business looked good. Next thing I knew they were closed. Did they move?

When you say "NYPD"... be aware, there are 2 "NYPDs", 1 downtown, and 1 on the West Side. They are unaffiliated, but both make yummo pizza. Milly's and Hello Deli on Candelaria have been my recent haunts for lunch. Now and again, I get to Jimmy's Cafe on Jefferson. I dig all the Jimmys on the walls.

The NYPD downtown is my favorite lunch spot. I just wish they delivered to my side of town!
