Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I had this idea awhile ago but I didn't really know why I wanted to do it until now. I'm fucking PISSED OFF about what is happening in my city, my state, this country, and our world. This is fucking rediculous people we need to wake up! We need to do something drastically different or else things are going to either stay the same or get worse. I do not see anyone who has the power to make major decisions who is coming up with any real ideas for change. The only people who want to drastically change things in a way that would do us some potential good get shouted down and labeled "crazy" or "too extreame".

Anyways, I'm biking to California this summer. You read that correctly I'm going to ride a bicycle from Albuquerque, NM to San Francisco, CA. I'm doing this because we need to realize that we do not have to be dependent on cars to get places. We could be a country of walkers, bikers, electric bus riders, train takers, and sailers. Instead when I drive down Central between San Pedro and Wyoming I see car dealer after car dealer with lots OVERFLOWING with brand spankin' new cars. Why do we need so many cars? WHY? Can anyone come up with a good reason other than laziness and convience? Are we going to kill ourselves because we were too lazy to take our fingers off of the trigger? Please tell me I'm not alone here.

I'm pissed because oil is at $120 a barrell and Pres. Bush says that the $300-$600 checks everyone (who filed for taxes) is getting should "help with the costs of rising gas prices.". HORSESHIT! If you really want to fight gas prices STOP BUYING IT. I'm not talking about those "one day boycott" kind of not buying it. I'm saying STOP FUCKING BUYING GASOLINE PERIOD. Ride a bike, take the bus find a job closer to where you live, work online, do something. I still drive on occasion, I am not without the sin of being lazy but I'm trying to change. I need to change. WE NEED TO CHANGE.

If anyone wants to start a bicycle club, or if you are insane and want to join me on my journey to San Francisco and back please email me.

Thanks for reading.

***update*** I really was not expecting so many people to read this. I'm used to writing on my normal blog where there is literally one reader, my friend Phil. So thanks to everyone It's been a lot of fun reading your comments. Here is a really thought provoking article that deals with this issue: Living in a post-oil society. Thanks again, it's awesome to find out on my second post what an active community this is. You guys are all really great!

If vulgarity were wattage you could power a small city.

Bicycling from Albuquerque to San Francisco and back you say? I must not have read that correctly; sounds like something out of a Jules Verne novel. Watch out in SW Utah, I hear THERE BE DRAGONS THERE!

What do you do for a living? Must not involve hauling anything around. Have children? Grocery shop for more than one person? Travel on airplanes? Use plastics? Buy anything transported by truck or train (including your bicycle)? You get the idea.

Guess I'll start hauling around lumber on my Schwinn. Gonna need a bigger basket.

When the oil is gone I for one will miss the plastic.

heh heh heh, Don. You know, the other day in the 'hood, I saw some guy riding a bike with a chair upside down on his head. But the chair was probably made of plastic, so it sort of neutralized the whole endeavor.

Yeah I forgot to add this: I do realize that nearly everything we do or own or buy involves oil. From manufacturing to transportation costs oil is used nearly every step of the way. However, I'm just talking about one aspect of oil usage, something we have quite a lot of control over. Like I said I'm not perfect and I wasn't trying to criticize individuals. I'm just saying we can do more s'all.

PS: If my vulgarity offended you well, I'm really fuckin' sorry 'bout that.

One of my favorite teachers in school once told me that people use vulgarity because they are not educated or articulate enough to express themselves in better terms. If your goal is to gain support, you might consider that next time, as I'm sure many people simply stopped reading at the first use of the "F" word.

"Fuck censorship" is my motto and I have a sticker to prove it, lol. =)

However, as ColoMichelle says, If your goal is to gain support..., I must concur.

Having said that, best of luck to you in your bicycle journey from ABQ to SF. I hope you are able to have many great experiences on this journey. I have known many people who have done long distance bike rides such as this (just for the experience) and I hope that someday I may also have the chance to do the same.

First: I'd like to say: "Wow" I'm really surprised that so many people have read this and taken the time to comment.
Second: While I agree that there are certain ways of speaking that will garner support from different groups of people I disagree that people only resort to using vulgarity due to a lack of education and/or vocabulary. While you weren't explicitly saying that, I feel that it is a sentiment that is shared by many people.
Third: Yeah support. Hmm... I guess I didn't really think about that. I was mostly just upset and offended and needed to express that in a public forum. However, seeing as how many people actually read this I will definitely think more before posting some heated blag about how I'm feeling at the moment.
Fourth: Back to vulgarity, I really think that there are times when curse words are appropriate. The term "colorful language" comes to mind. I was upset, and I felt that words like "fuck" and "pissed" and "shit" best expressed how I was feeling at the time. While "chagrined" is one of my favorite words (though I always mispronounce it on purpose) it's just not the kind of word that I would use in a rant like this.

Anyways, thanks for the thoughtful replies!

I for one am all for "profanity" when it's used in context, and you certainly did here.

I agree, the only real solutions are things people are generally too lazy to bother with. However, the way the economy is right now, people are being forced to make adjustments they never thought would be necessary, and recognizing the importance of change is becoming more and more mainstream. The hope has to lie with us, we can't continue to depend on a defunct political system.

The whole post would have been better without the F-bomb. Good points made, but all lost in the vilgarity.

Of course I can't spell either.... vulgarity is what I meant.
