How many more senseless deaths must NM endure in service to poorly thought out mass transit? Another notch in the Rail Runner's caboose. Though this one appears to be a suicide, the line's kill-to-passenger ratio seems disturbingly high.
Well, it wasn't shoved down my throat, nor the throats of most of the people I know. From what I've seen, most of the agencies and municipalities that RailRunner reaches are pretty excited the train is there, too...the developers and business owners in Belen, Los Lunas, Bernalillo and Santa Fe certainly seem to be making a big fuss about the train's arrival. I'm willing to bet, in fact, that a majority of folks along the RailRunner route strongly support the train, and that you're part of the "minority few" on this one, Mark.
How is the train in Los Lunas? Does it usually run pretty close to the schedule times or does it run early? I'm house sitting out there so I"ll probably be using it a great deal to get between ABQ and LL to save on gas.
that's a piss poor attitude to say the least. How many states have a lower DWI death rate than NM for instance? Should we all say "hey, this is NM. If you dont' want to die at the hands of some drunkin a-hole then move back to where you came from". I happen to be a lifelong resident of NM and I sure as hell am waiting with decreasing patience for the chance to take mass transit more efficiently than is currently available. I can't wait for the opportunity to take the train to Santa Fe, if for nothing else than to be able to have dinner and drink that 2nd or 3rd or 4th glass of wine, with ample opportunity to sober up before getting back to ABQ, and get home without worrying about surviving yet one more hair raising trip down I-25.
Drunk people aren't even allowed on the bus, I doubt they'd be allowed on the train. But I think there should be a whole different paddle (with extra holes and maybe fifteen/twenty spikes) for people who drive drunk. I think that DWIs are a whole other issue that goes beyond just transit. But I have had to come in from Rio Rancho when some drunken idiot couldn't find the correct lane to be in and it took me three hours to get from Rio Rancho to CNM missing a midterm thus failing a class. The Safe Ride Services should be taking care of the drunk problem but they will only pick you up from a place that officially serves alcohol--like a restaraunt or bar. It should be improved such that they can go and pick yo up at another residence so that you're ot tempted to drive home because you don't want to pay cab fare.
But to answer your question--depends on the amount of money you would expect to get paid in the event a drunk ran over your small child either killing him or damaging her for life. Divide that into the billions you think it will cost to complete the project and you have your answer as to whether or not it would be worth it.
In my day we didn't have these fancy traaiiins... there was no such thing as emissions, we all used regular gasoline and we didn't have fancy mass transit.
Nobody had any foresight, that's the way it was and we liked it!
