Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I swear, I've tried every cold, flu, allergy, and fever-reducing medication out there. I've rinsed my sinuses with salt water. I've eaten whole cloves of garlic and consumed green tea concoctions. I've been in bed for what seems like DAYS. And nothing seems to budge this nasty, nasty sinus crud.

I caught it from someone else, so I know it's going around. Does anyone have any tips on beating it?

How's your medical coverage?
Though, does it SEEM like days, or has it BEEN days?
Sometimes God just wants you to sit still and breed some bacteria for most of a week and that's all you can do.

It's been days, which sucks. I'm now on a combo of Alka-Selzer, Sudafed, Benadryl, Zyrtec, salt water, and bed rest. Which is somewhat productive. Also, lots of soup.

I asked this over in the food group -- anyone got a good source for Chinese hot & sour soup?

Have you tried the nettie pot. It really helps. If you havent used it before just read the directions first.

I love the neti.

Sometimes only rest and fluids will help. You are taking a lot of over the counter medication that will dry up your sinuses and while you may think that is what you want, sometimes it is not. They also may be working at cross purposes. Stop all the drugs, let them clear from your body, use advil for fever and aches, drink lots of fluids like water and juice, start some Vitamin D to boost your immune system. Do whatever you can to feel better- showers, hot baths, small walks. Take naps then get up for a while- laying around may make the symptoms worse. Try a nice rest in the sun- it can make you feel a lot better. My grandmother use to swear by a shot of Irish whiskey in warm water with honey. After we came around, we always felt better!

I'm reviving this conversation because there's a new crud going around (oh, and thanks, Spring). And because the NY Times has a cool little piece today about putting saline up your nose. Which is what I'm doing.

That article prompted me to get one!
It's an interesting experience... but I think it works.

I've had it for almost 2 weeks now, and I've lost my patience!!!

I love the NeilMed Sinus Rinse! It's like the neti pot, but totally not anywhere near as messy or gross. LOVE. Available at Walgreens and other fine retailers.

Not that it's cured me or anything. It's just that it's an improvement.
