Ahh... the sweet sounds of City Council

Here I am in the press room at the venerable Vincent E. Griego Chambers which are currently hosting a long drawn-out planning debate and I'm not sure on which dais the greater comedy occurs.

Down there, we've got Councilor Jones talking about superheroes, Councilor Benton giving a university lecture, and Councilor Mayer doing her usual folksy flailing. Somebody testifying on the public podium just quoted a comment off the NM Independent and a councilor moved to strike it from the record.

Up here inside the press room where I'm hanging with various representatives of our fine local media, we've got councilor drinking stories and quotability rankings not to mention a helluva lot of breath mints.

They've just called recess, or break, or whatever it's called. I overhear someone nearby cry out "For the love of god that was tough."

Anyone else here and available for commiseration? They haven't even gotten to tonight's big issues yet -- the downtown arena -- and I already need reinforcements.

You are a very brave woman.

My hat is off to you. Somebody needs to do it.

Trust me. Breath mints are your friend when you've got to interview people in person. In fact, you'll wish everyone used them.

I'll admit that I'm the lesser (wo)man, but if members of the real press can leave, I can too.

We'll leave it to the dedicated Dan McKay for the full report. McKay. No, McKay.

The oddity increases.

I just received an email from the guy who runs the danmckay.com website. Here's what he has to say:

For what it's worth, my real name isn't Dan McKay :) My sole trip to Albuquerque was to the Fiery Foods Show a couple of years ago. (Love the hot stuff!)

I'd love to come to next year's show. Bet the newspaper guy doesn't have to pay for his passes!

Love your Ning community. Thanks for the hits.

Great. This guy's plastered the Interwebs with "Dan McKay" -- and it's not even his real name.

the big question: why did he pick that name?

Hey Chantal - I was there and left at the break to do mom stuff. (And also because my computer battery died and there were no outlets at the seats to plug into! Now I understand why most people were using paper and pen...) So I'm watching from home (LIVE on Gov TV) and sipping a glass of wine. PM me if you want to meet afterwards and deconstruct.

Just what was the superhero reference all about? Enlighten us please?

Reply to This

To be honest, I'm not sure that I caught the full superhero reference as I was shamelessly gossiping with McKay but Councilor Jones called someone (members of the Silver Hill neighborhood? out of state developers? chef Johnny Orr who supplies dinner to half of the press corp?) a superhero. Councilor O'Malley picked it up and lobbed it at Councilor Cadigan, calling him a superhero.

Oh the endless wit.

The quote from the NMI was about Lou Colombo saying the Gold street project should pass. The planner for the project quoted it, even though he had been instructed by the city attorney not to reference any of the publicity on the case. Then Cadigan later said it didn't matter to him if superstars like Colombo were in support of a project. Jones picked that back up, and it was unclear to me what she was saying...something along the lines of equating "superheros of the past" with the PGS. Who knows? Then O'Malley said something like, "past superheros? like Cadigan?" Lot's going on in all of that...if you've followed the Council over the years, interpret how you will!
