I asked my sister about the pizza place we always go to when I visit. I couldn't remember the name. The Pizza box. But she had more to say, whetting my appetite for my next visit home in August.

From her:
Pizza box - old school not fancy garden in the back. Great for the wee ones or on a nice day when you want to sit outside. Bleaker st just west of Sullivan.

Johns - farther west on bleeker (near leroy st) Pies only. Sometimes a line since its listed in many of the tourist books. Dark graffiti covered booths and cranky waiters. Fantastic.

Arturos. On Houston at Thompson. and all around good italian.piano at the bar. Full of neighborhood character (and characters!)

While we're on the subject of neighborhood eateries, Tomoe sushi, on Thompson just north of Houston, is authentic fantastic Japanese, but get there early (they open at 5 pm) or you'll have to wait for a while for a table.

Well, we're flying in to LaGuardia Airport and staying in Queens, but want to go and see as many things as possible all over the city. Leaving next Sunday early morning.

Eat pizza. Lots of it. Cheese. Not too many toppings. Try calzones. Baked ziti. Get a canoli.

Find delis. Be amazed by their sandwiches. Super tall in height. Like a delicious bowling ball in your stomach. Pastrami. Roast Beef. Chicken Parmigiana. Try a knish. Get a pickel.

Bagels. Like you've never had (sorry Einstein, well, not really) Don't get cranberry or anything silly like that. Sesame, poppy, pumpernickel. No weird cream cheeses, just plain.

Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. Beautiful views. Cheap.

Check out the Village & East Village. Washington Square Park. Chinatown. Little Italy. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Battery Park. Financial District. You can walk this entire thing. You should walk like you've never walked before!

I'd recommend the Lonely Planet guides. They have walking tours that you just do by yourself. If you're into this sort of thing, get a AIA (American Institute of Architects) Guide to NYC.

Go to the upper west side. Walk around central park. Check out the Museum of Natural History (you have to do this, especially if you liked A Catcher in the Rye).

Finally, keep in mind, when people say "excuse me", they mean "get out of my way".

I know it's touristy, but if you haven't been to the top of the Empire State Building, you must go. I recommend doing the the audio tour with that.

Museums are cool, but plan to spend a better part of a day exploring each one on your list. Also, don't expect to be able to see everything, especially in the larger museums like the Museum of Natural History. My favorite is the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Someone mentioned the Brooklyn Falls in another thread.. I would definitely check this out, as it is only a temporary installation.

FOOD:
-have a hotdog at Papya King
-have brunch at Balthazar
-get a Pain au Chocolat from Bouchon Bakery (Columbus Circle)
-the Russian Tea room is fun
-frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity

FUN:
-Grab an Ice Cream and sit on a bench in Central Park. Watch the city walk by.
-I thought the Empire State Building was overrated. You can go to the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) and see just as much for half the price. (If you do go to the Empire State Building a Papaya King is across the street).
-Times Square at 2:00AM

I hope this helps. Have a great time.

If you do go to Central Park, please take a ride on the carousel. It is probably the cheapest form of entertainment in the city and it's the best ride!!! Plenty of fun to be sure. And while you're feeling like a kid again, not too far off is FAO Schwartz toy store; if you're lucky, the giant keyboard is on display--Tom Hanks anyone??

Lunch in or dinner in Chinatown (which truly becomes another place at sunset), cross Canal St and have canoli or gelato in Little Italy.

And a visit to Ground Zero is just a subway ride from anywhere. I highly recommend it.

Bon voyage!!!

Don't ever say hi to strangers in New York. You will immediately find yourself in handcuffs surrounded by sirens and agents in black suits and in suspicion of being a terrorist because you walk a little slower, make eye contact when passing by in the grocery isle, and pronounce your rhotics.

Ok not really, but, boy, New Yorkers are creepy.

Just got back a few hours ago, boy did I do alot of walking these past five days ! First impressions of everthing.....It's over hyped. Maybe my attitude will change when i'm less cranky and my sore knees stop hurting and the blisters on my feet go away. More later.
