Can anyone recommend a good primary care physician in Albuquerque? My wife has been trying to deal with UNM Hospitals, but it has just been one headache after another. I don't know if she just has had bad luck or what, but the staff she has dealt with there has been really rude and unhelpful.
If anyone has a suggestion for a good doctor/office, that would be SO helpful. Thanks!
We go to a Doctor at First Choice down in the South Valley. They do a new patient intake only once a month, but they do accept new clients at the new facility off Centro Familiar. Much better service than we ever got at "Bridges in Medicine".
I have a Pres doctor: Margaret Royson. I've only had to see her once for something that ended up going away by itself but she's the family doctor serving in Presbyterian Northside. She knows the ins and outs of every family member except me because I hate putting up with doctors. But she treats my family good so I would recommend her if you could swing it.
Dr. Unverzagt doesn't requre the practice fee, but if you pay it, it allows you more access to him during off hours. I haven't paid it, and I have found him to be very responsive. I think it would be worth it for folks with chronic conditions, but for someone who goes in a few times a year, it's not required or necessary.
My husband and I both have a great PCP named Dr. Teresa Sigala -- she has a private practice on "pill hill" and accepts Pres and Blue Cross and probably others.
She's amazing -- when you're in the office with her, she takes her time with you, really listens to what's going on with you and genuinely cares about her patients. She's got a wicked sense of humor and is very good with patients.
For the weird ailments that she can't take care of (sleep aepnea, for example), she's always referred us to very competent specialists. She is also very into preventative care and will work with you to make a long-term plan for your health, based on your age, gender and risk factors. So you don't just go in for treatment for a particular issue, but you also feel like she's helping you take a long-term look at your overall health. Her staff is wonderful, too.
The only drawback is that you tend to wait about 30 minutes or even more after the scheduled appointment to go back to see her, but I think it's because all of her patients get the care and attention they need when they're with her. I never feel rushed when I'm with her, and that's worth waiting for.
Hope this helps -- don't even get me started about UNMH :)
I have BCBS and after loosing a great doctor (who died suddenly last year) I was on the lookout too. I had to see a spinal orthopedic last spring - Dr. Richard Radecki (only saw him once to eval an MRI but the experience was positive) and he recommended any of the docs at Northside Family Practice, which is the office of Margaret Royson. Dr Royson has been mentioned by someone here but as of last fall she wasn't taking any new patients. I ended up seeing Dr. Martha Kent (superman's mom!) who is taking new patients, and have been very happy so far. I've seen her for an annual physical, then for a bout with food poisoning (they got me in for an appt. right away) and another emergency situation. I've had a great experience there so far and have been happy with the treatment I've gotten. Dr. Kent is conservative when it comes to treatment, which I like. My case-in-point: I have situational asthma and was prescribed a corticosteroid inhaler by my last doc. I was convinced that my symptoms had subsided (allergy season usually triggers it for me) and wanted to get off the steroids. My last doc wanted me to stay on as she described it as "preventative", but I stopped taking them anyway and I've been fine since. Dr. Kent agreed with me that unless I start to have problems again, I should keep controlling my symptoms with the diet, exercise, and alternative/naturopathic approaches I had been trying. She and her nurse are always happy to talk with me and answer questions I have, and very thoroughly at that. I've heard good things about all the doctors at that office. I think they take most insurances. Their offices are at 6100 Pan American Frwy NE Ste 390, Albuquerque, NM 87109, (505)823-1805.
I used to see a male gynecologist at Women's Specialists at Pres. He was gentle, a great listener, gave very good care, would research something and get back to you if he didn't know the answer. I was really sorry when he left.
I live in the Ridgecrest /nob hilll area and my husband and I need everything, PCP OBGYN (for me of course) eye, teeth, we have BCBS any recommendations for our area? We are very happy to pay more for a pleasant office and good staff/physician. NO woo woo, Doctors who are into preventative care not meds.
