So, Lucy (my furry child) developed a bit of separation anxiety this summer. Several people recommended Rescue Remedy by BachFlower. I would like to give it to her but I am confused about the directions. After reading them, I discovered that this product is for humans. Is it safe for dogs, as well? I bought it from a pet catalog and I believed it was for 4-legged critters.
Any advice?

Ah. Okay, this doesn't appear to be separation anxiety. It's noise anxiety.
The next time a thunderstorm rolls in try the T-shirt method. As the author states, white noise is very helpful, like a fan set on high.
There are a lot of theories about why this works, but nobody really knows for sure. Perhaps the t-shirt blocks or minimizes the static charges that are being flung around. Perhaps the tightness of the t-shirt makes the dog feel like it's a part of a pack or safe in a cave. All we know is that in most cases of noise/thunder anxiety, it works.
It is no wonder that Lucy is a 'velcro-dog', what with her previous owner history. It's great that you both found each other!
RR is fine for dogs, but it's not a "cure." Crate training has been recommended by a few people here, and I swear by it.
It gives them a safe place they know is "theirs." Foster puppy is slowly taking to the crate.
He didn't like being away from people at night, and he howled like the little imp he is, but our "pack" seems to have helped him calm down and appreciate his own little space.
Now he doesn't like it other dogs go near "his" space. It also helps that he gets treats whenever he goes to his crate on his own.
Lucy was rescued by my sister from some very bad people. They threw her out of a moving vehicle. She was spayed at a typical age. I am hoping that the bad times have passed. It's just that this behavior came out of nowhere.
Per my wife who is a vet tech of many years, they used Rescue Remedy all the time for both cats and dogs. It's proven and safe. We even used it for our kitty, Boo, when he had some aggression issues while staying with her mom.
Thanks for all the wonderful advice. It seems that DCF has a lot of caring and knowledgeable people. I thought that you might like to see a pic of Lucy.
