Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I was driving down Juan Tabo near Brentwood, looked to my right (east, that is), and saw the latest reincarnation of Dagmar's in a little strip mall. It had just opened, so I haven't had a chance to try it and get the scoop on her latest gig. When it cools down a bit, some sauerbraten and strudel will hit the spot!

There was a deli called New York NY Deli on Juan Tabo and Candelaria. I used to go there in the evenings because there are no delis open in ABQ after 3:00 p.m. besides Times Square Deli Mart across from UNM (Times Square Deli Mart rocks, by the way)...

Long story short, I went to New York NY Deli last week after work, and they were closed. Paper covering the windows. A sign that said something like "coming soon Dagmar's"....

Never been to Dagmar's but am now curious!

Thanks for the tip - I'll have to check out this location - the other location was further south. It's a shame that the NYNY deli closed down - some of my friends loved that place. (Plus Walgreens on Juan Tabo and Montgomery wiped out my favorite Jewish deli.....)

I noticed a deli recently opened a little farther up the road on Montgomery just west of Tramway (south side of Montgomery in a strip mall where Howie's and Subway are). Could this be a reincarnation of the Jewish deli you are talking about?

The place in Caracol Plaza on the SW corner of Montgomery and Tramway is called Pastrami and Things and is the reincarnation of the one pushed out by the upcoming Walgreens. Can't vouch for it because I'm vegetarian, but it might be worth a try if you're jonesing for NY-style deli.

Moving Pastrami
Why would Pastrami & Things move just half a mile east when it was perfectly happy where it was?
Because Walgreens was comin' to town and there just wasn't room in that town for both of 'em. "That town" was the retail center at the corner of Montgomery and Juan Tabo, where Lys Alexander owned the restaurant previously in the hands of her mother, Bunny.
"If I had had the choice, I wouldn't have moved," said Bunny, who'd been at the site 61/2 years.
Bunny is the real deal ("I'm a New Yorker," she said. "This is the best you can get anywhere in the country.")
She was referring not just to anything that includes pastrami, but to the two daily soups, a matzo ball and one other, like a French onion, potato leek or vegetarian split pea, other sandwiches and dinners.
Lys and Bunny are satisfying the New Yorker in us all at their new address, 12500 Montgomery NE. For more information, call 332-8586.

Bunny is awesome...her brisket is to die for, and she makes the best black and white cookies in town. I hope she's doing well in her new location, although I miss having her within walking distance of my job.

Phil, I've gotta immodestly disagree on their black and whites being "the best in town"! I've come up with a good recipe, so next time I make them, I'll have to give you some, and you can compare!

I accept your challenge! And retract my absolute endorsement...any "best pastry" argument changes once you and your relatives start making them!

Dagmar is back
As you enjoy your next sip of coffee, the aroma, the bold wake-up call, imagine how much better it would be with a bite of cherry streudel. Real, handmade German streudel. By a real German hand. Really.
Dagmar Mondragon is back. Schnitzels and rouladens are back. Oh, and a rotation of 45 streudels. Like maybe apple served with vanilla sauce on the bottom, rum-soaked raisins inside and whipped cream on top.
Dagmar's, at 2120 Juan Tabo NE, is now baking and cooking her former Dagmar's Delectables menu. And, a brand new Southwest breakfast schnitzel.
For now, she's offering just breakfast and lunch in her 35-seater, with lots to-go. On down the road, she may open for dinner Friday and Saturday nights. This incarnation of Dagmar's is half bakery, half cafe. Patrons can custom-order baked goods and expect to see chocolate-dipped macaroons, almond horns, cinnamon claws, German rye bread, pumpernickel, Black Forest cheesecakes, bread baskets and more.
Better get over there. If you want to call ahead, it's 293-1982.

Dag nabbit - we're getting scooped on food happenings by a newspaper?

I think I need to put my chowhound sniffer back on duties - and I need your help! When a spot opens up, post it up here, or on your local food blog *cough* of choice....

:-)
