That's nice, Drexler. Look, I happen to think it's saccharine dreck myself, but it's art and some people buy it. I'm not going to tell people what they should and shouldn't hang on their walls--just as I hope they don't tell me what I should and shouldn't hang on my walls.
I don't know how well that store will do there--I would more put it in Old Town or even up in one of those strip malls in the far Northeast Heights. But I don't care that it is in Nob Hill. I wouldn't worry about Mariposa, people. I think it has found its target audience handily.
But I wonder if Thomas Kinkade will come and "put" his DNA on the paintings in there from time to time there in the store. Maybe Self Serve could coordinate something with him. Heh...and eeeeewwww!
I believe there was a Thomas Kinkade store near the old Ambrozia in Old Town. Closed down a couple of years ago.
Seriously folks, who cares? What is truly alarming is number Nob Hill shops that have shuttered recently; PaperGami, Abode, Rock-N-Bills Mercantile, AlphaVideo, Blue, Pulse, Beyond Borders, Martha's Body Bueno, the Town House, Sonny's Bar and Grill and Kyle Zimmerman Photography (Kyle is moving downtown).
The only new arrival I remain somewhat jazzed about is Ecco Gelato. Nob Hill Bar and Grill has been a disappointment and Imbibe seems to be importing the downtown "scene". Urban Outfitters is creating some buzz but didn't that chain peak around 1997?
Nob Hill's central business district has tremendous potential but right now rates about a 5 out of 10. The arrival of the Painter of Light neither adds or detracts, in my opinion.
I'm actually formulating a blog post about why TK and its equivalents are evil, and it's probably not for the same reasons, in my mind, that a lot of people in my life would think. I'll try to write that tonight...
Is it something about mass production disguised as handmade? The creation of ideas about "art" that displace actual art in some insidious, subtle way? Or about commodification in general? Your adoring fans eagerly await your cogent analysis.
As for my own response to the Kinkade gallery:
SNORT!!!
Laughter, preferably the derisive kind, is the best medicine. Or just ignore it--in this case itmay actually go away.
And I must admit that I just deleted my initial comment further up, as it was unnecessarily negative about a section of the population that may or may not have contributed to an unpleasant experience this past weekend, and I may have been speaking from an angry place.
I will repeat my amusement at the idea of Jen and Liz having to look across the street at the Kinkaid storefront. Girls, if you see this, give me a buzz at home or work and I will bring a bottle over and we can all get hammered and laugh & scream about it.
