I guess it's common sense to assume that being in the middle of a desert, Albuquerque doesn't have much to offer as far as seafood goes. But is that true? I can only call upon the few times I've had it here to make a judgement call but I'd like to hear from others. Calamari at Whisque was just so-so while shrimp we bought from a supermarket were subpar. Have I just not found the right place to go to get my fish fix? Or should I stick to fresh fish like trout, and if so, where should I go to eat it at restaurants or buy it at stores? Just looking for some help finding tasty omega-3.
A lot of the South American & Mexican Diners have "seafood-stew, 7 types of seafood soups, fish soups", Deliciousio!!! There is also a rough looking mexican seafood place on Central opposite the fairgrounds that do a wicked crumbed whole fish.
I grew up on Fish n Chips on Fridays, the best of this genre I had was at Two Fools Tavern, they do a nice fried cod, but you have to ask for hand cut chips or you will get Fish n Fries :)
I think the rough place you're talking about is Los Arcos. It's a family run restaurant and they really seem to care about the food quality. I haven't been there in a few years but they have my favorite Cocktail de Camarones in town. Huge glass of really nice, big shrimp with avacado. Two things to keep in mind about Los Arcos: they close early in the evening and they only accept cash (last time I checked).
I've not been here long enough to offer many restaurant recommendations, but we had an astounding trout dish at Nob Hill Bar and Grill last week...
and try the frozen fish at Trader Joe's.... they have a mahi mahi that is really good.
and as far as the seafood in the desert argument-- I don't buy it. Nearly ALL seafood is frozen (or at the very least kept on ice) from the minute it is pulled out of the ocean until it gets to shore.
Try calling Nantucket Shoals and see who and what they recommend. Fish that arrived at their place in the morning is going to be a special somewhere that evening.
I have to go with JeSais on the frozen thing.
"Fresh" fish from Whole Foods, or Smiths across from it, and even John Brooks has not let me down.
For restaurants have you tried "Pelican's"?

wow, a lot of responses but could you guys clarify as to whether you're talking about restaurants or stores? thanks. i recognize trader joe's of course.
Nantucket Shoals is an importer. They have a store front, but they also provide fresh fish to many Albuquerque restaurants. If you have fresh fish in Albuquerque, it probably came through them. Thus, they'll have the scoop on what's fresh and who has it.
We once decided to make sushi at home- went there, bought a pound of sashimi grade tuna. It didn't take long for us to find out how very far that much tuna goes. We needed to invite a half dozen friends over to help us eat all the rolls.
Nantucket Shoals is located on Academy north of San Mateo. You might also try the fish offerings at Ta Lin Market, Central and Louisiana.
There are a couple of Mexican seafood restaurants in town that get very good reviews: try Mariscos La Playa on the west side and Los Equipales near Washington and Central.
Ta Lin World Market (Central and Louisiana) also has some good seafood - and at good prices. They tend to have a bigger selection than other markets (including interesting fish you won't see outside of Asian stores) and more "complete" pieces (whole fish, whole shrimp, etc.).
