I would like to buy my college age son a good used car that he can drive back to college on the East Coast. I am very leary of used cars- my father use to say you were buying someone else's problem. I have a good mechanic who will inspect it but I would like to spend as little time as possible running all over town looking at other's cast offs that are worthless. And I hate the whole cheesy used car salesman crap- I understand cars and want someone who will be honest, fair and upfront, knowing if it works, I have other kiddos to buy cars for and so he or she just got all that business. Plus referrals.

You should try Houston Wholesale on Lomas east of Washington. I purchased my car there and had no complaints. The salesperson wasn't full of crap and he did everything he could to get me the loan.

Cross Country Auto Sales has a great team, Mark and Ian on the Westside and Bill at the Lomas location are all great people.

Pay your mechanic to find you a car.

carmax is pretty great and they offer thorough checks on cars before they put them on the lot. their salesstaff is almost entirely drawn from non-car sales fields so you don't get the after taste of the typical car lot. thritfy iss good to. if you don't see what you want they will find it for you at auction. plus don chalmers owns them so you are getting their good rep along with the car.

I second Houston Wholesale on Lomas. We have bought our last four cars from them. No issues.

we had great luck with CU Auto Sales, through the Educators Credit Union.

Are there any Hertz car sales locations in ABQ? I've purchased three of my vehicles from them out here in California. I usually paid 2k or more under blue book and all three vehicles have run forever and stayed in good shape.

no referrals, just frustrations. They are all nothing but scum. New car dealers, used car dealers. You're better off just going in with that attitude and don't buy any of their buddy buddy bullshit pitches.

There's a huge glut of cars, nothing is selling and unless you're dense enough to let them know you need one now, they'll negotiate on price.

An alternative is to buy a repo through a bank or CU if you can find a decent one, but its the same thing, they are trying to make back money.
