Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I've managed to distract myself from an around-the-city tour of Albuquerque's sushi joints (which I've quite enjoyed, actually) and am now on a search for really great Indian.

I went to Taj Mahal last night. Delish. Where should I go next?

Which one is the place that puts pomegranate seeds in their food? It's sort of tucked in next to a dive bar in the Heights. I think.

I believe that is Indian Kitchen on Montgomery just East of Louisiana, Kitson. Right by where Assets/Liquid Assets used to be. I forget the name of the dive bar.

Is that dive bar Mugsy's Brass Rail? I used to drink beer by the pitcherfull back in the day at Mugsy's. I don't even know if they are still there, but they used to be next door to Liquid Assets (later Assets Grill), and Charlie's Other Door (now gone).

That's right, Mugsy's. It's still there as far as I know.

I really like Rasoi. I prefer eating something off the menu at dinner over the lunch buffet. Their Kashmiri naan is to die for!

Rasoi is really nice. Its one of the more expensive Indian meals we have had in Albuquerque, but it had the best defined fresh flavors. And the Paneer is definately home made, bumps in all the right places. Never had the buffet there, but one day we will :)

The style of food reminded us of our old favorite Pakistani haunt, i think Kashmir borders Pakistan.

They are also celebrating Indian Independence Day tomorrow, Dinner special menu 49.95 for 2. They successfully kicked the british out as well.

Sophie, India Palace is the best I've had in Albuquerque, and I absolutely love Indian food. Niki, Sage and I like to get chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, saag paneer and daal makhni from India Palace.

The only drawback is it's a bit far from the usual restaurant districts, as it's near Wyoming and Montgomery NE.

I vote for Taj Palace. I also like India Palace' buffet. I haven't been to India Kitchen in ages. We used to go to Taj Mahal but the last couple of times, the food was only so-so. I often eat Indian food with my Nepali friends. I consider them experts, since Nepal and India can be similar culturally and food-wise. Plus they went to grad school in India. My friends are amazing cooks and their dishes are SO much better than any restaurant. Unusual ingredients and lots more fire than the commercial dinners.
Has anyone eaten at the Himalaya restaurant in SF?
When is Indian Independence Day? What is it, about 60 years since they dumped the Brits?
Is there a Pakistani restaurant in town?

India Indepedence Day is today, Friday, Aug 15th.

Alas, there is no Pakistani in Albq, there was one in our old town we use to frequent often. It was like Indian food but more fragrant and dryer, and they did a killer lamb kidney curry :)

There are lots of different regional styles of Indian cooking, of course, but I don't know what kind of representation we have here. I have family in Singapore and every Indian restaurant there was completely different! I love India Kitchen here for the ambiente.. same family still owns it.

Also chiming in for India Palace. Also Rasoi is also a refreshing change of pace sometimes - lighter, it seems to me.

I made myself very sad once by looking up nutrition information on common Indian dishes, especially fat, calories, etc. There are some things we're better off just not knowing.

I love India Palace here in ABQ. I have eaten at all of the other places listed (except for the Santa Fe India Palace) and I think it's by far the best and truest to food I've had cooked for me by friends from India. I would vote for Taj second. As for Rasoi, I've never gone for dinner, but I'm not totally impressed with their lunch buffet. It's a nice change of pace from the other University restaurants, but far from the best Indian food I've had..
