Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Hey... what's to say? I'm a 19 year old single gay male and I just started classes here at UNM. it's been a hectic week, for sure! anyway, I didn't honestly have much knowledge about 'Burque before coming here. A friend who lived here informed me of its "austerely conservative" political climate - but having lived here now for a couple of weeks, I'll say that i've observed EXACTLY the opposite. I found a statistic online showing that ABQ was basically split down the middle as far as politics go but I find a much more visible liberal environment.

anyway, my question is, how is ABQ as far as the "gay scene" goes? is the environment really generally liberal as I've observed? are there any *winces at the term* night clubs? note, I grew up in west texas, so I'll need time to adjust. O_O

well,
the queer group doesn't get too much attention. And recently some of the queer clubs have shut down. But, you'll find community.

It is liberal in certain segments of the population, however that is the case in many other places. The gay community is not as visible as in larger cities. Good or bad you have to make an effort to connect. The trend is more and more "integration", thus the demise of more and more "bars". Under 21 venues are frowned upon by Major Chavez and the Governor, as an example the recent Club 7 raid.

I would suggest joining the GLBT organization on campus, MPower, and volunteer for events such as the upcoming Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. The First Unitarian Church has an extended family group that is GLBT that is very liberal and active.

Its a learning experience and you will take what you will from the various choices.

As with any suggestion about socializing, get involved with activities that put you in the path of people with similar interests, gay or straight. More likely you will make friends from those associations than in a bar, just takes more effort and time.

Hope this helps

marty might be a lot of things, but i think its unfair to say he stands in the way of gays. he has very openly gay on his staff.
his stance on underage drinking can't be construed as anti-gay.

I didn't say anything about Major Chavez's attitude toward GLBT persons, my comment was directly about under age venues. Pulse, Lotus, and Club7 all had 18+ nights which had many 18+ attendee's gay and st8, it is appropriate to mention it because it has had an affect on a segment of the adult gay population ... lest we forget if you are 18 you can vote, make a binding contract, marry ( if you are st8 ), and go to war.

The attitude eliminated a social scene for many GLBT 18-20 persons. The Social Club in NobHill would be a "quiet" venue but their policy and license makes 18+ not possible. So what is left?

I agree with what Lady Doth Protest Too Much said. The community is out there but you have to make the effort to find us :o)

Welcome to Albuquerque!

I'm not convinced that the size of the community is what makes this place different. When I was new in town, I found it extremely difficult to get information about what was going on. It also feels somewhat more insular here than in other places I've been.

Albuquerque is pretty progressive and there are a lot of gay people around. There isn't a "gay neighborhood" like in other cities where you can go and see same-sex couples holding hands in broad daylignt. I don't think it would be a problem if anyone did that, I just think gay folks think that ABQ is more conservative than it actually is. Probably remnant feelings from when it was less acceptable to be lgbtq in society in general.

Since you are under 21, I'm not sure where to tell you to go. MPower would probably be a good first stop. Also, get on myspace & facebook and start looking up other gay people. There's also a gay group on here. Hope you find some good pals and goodtimes in the Duke City.

I always say that Albuquerque is less liberal towards us homos and more often just operates under the "ma~nana" concept --"I dont like you queers, I would like to beat you up, but not today, ma~nana"

(I cant get the enyay over the N, dang it) there are alot of closeted NM gay men, as I understand, lots of guys who are married but have sex with men...

Its much like the NM approach to abortion, public dislike, but less protesting at the clinics by the religious because your neice might need one some day and you dont want to mess that up... your nephew is a lovely boy with good taste and an attractive roommate who works out alot;

If you are from a big progressive city, it is a bit of a shocker to move here... I came from Pittsburgh and had alot of trouble assimilating to NM gay life... its much more couple-y in the lesbian community without alot of non-bar activities... YMMV, of course
