Totally love the student art. There is some incredible student art in our state. Also love the flower and vegetable exhibits. Love the fresh veggies from all the local growers and farmers markets.
I also seem to be there on the day of the car show on main street. Too cool. I also like hearing all the music in the various venues outside of Tingley. There are always great local acts.
And yes, the food. Give me some corn on the cob, fry bread, donuts, bbq, carmel and candied apples, a turkey leg, candied nuts, lemonade, etc. and then some TUMS!!!
My favorite thing to do is the Model Railroad building. This seems to have gotten short shrift in the last few years, smaller in smaller facilities. Or maybe I just got bigger. There's a major beachin' model Railroad Museum in Alamagordo and for anyone who likes model railroads totally worth the trip.
I guess my second favorite exhibit is the Game and Fish exhibit which features loads of hands on for the whole famile. My kids like checking out the sand pit with various types of Critter Track Stamps.
Car shows on main street are fun to stroll though right time of day.
And the live music everywhere. Especially all the traditional music of the different "New Mexicans."
first we eat, then we watch some native dances and eat. then we look at baby animals and the rabbits (there are some craaaazy looking rabbits). more eating. I love the model trains, although it was only up for a few days last year, and we like to check out all the 4H stuff. eat. wander around the pavilion and listen to the pitches for non-stick pans and amazing mops. have some pie, maybe, or another ear of corn. pics in the photo booth have become an annual tradition. the people watching on the midway is always fun and we usually have room for some cotton candy. then we come back at least one other day, mostly for eating and people watching.
a few years ago, we got to see most of the final rounds of the arm wrestling competition, which, it turns out, is awesome. (seriously, I'm not kidding. mostly.) we haven't timed it right since then, but one of these years we'll have to check the schedule and watch the arm wrestling again. it goes great with nachos or a green chile cheese burger.

It all depends on when I am going;
I believe in going Sunday morning, as soon as it opens... then eating peach pie from Asbury Cafe with ice cream... and you have to shreek "PIIIIIIIIIIIE" the whole time...
otherwise, its all event/food ties
dances in the indian village and mutton stew.
watching lunatics scream on the various bunjee devices and sausage on a stick.
going to the hypnosis show and eating raspberries in icecream
wandering around various animal barns munching on corn. with butter and salt.
walking inside the luhan building while eating pecan rolls. (some might prefer the apples with caramel, but I digress)
This is our favorite fair tactic also. Go on Sunday morning when it is cool, crisp and the grounds are a little "fresher" smelling. Not too many people are around, lots of livestock being brought out. Have pie for breakfast. It's my favorite time at the fair. If we can't make it on a Sunday morning we don't go at all.
At least one year, several of the local African American churches did step competition, which is beyond awesome to watch. Those kids are so cool, I just love it.
My favorite thing at the fair is making out but I haven't done that in over 40 years, cuz my girl didn't want to anymore after we got married. We've seen a lot of things at the fair over the years, including, along with our kids, a calf being born at the dairy barn. The rodeo, Adelita? Not any more, it's way too commercial and the music is too loud and the grand entry is too slow, the horses weighed down with signs, and the rodeo announcer telling the same tired, right wing jokes. I liked the rodeo when Roy Rogers was there in 1957.
The best thing at the fair for kids is Old McDonald's Farm, a recent addition (last four or five years) and the creation of fair marketing guru Kathy Duffy. My favorite things today: The Fine Arts exhibits, the Junior Livestock Auction and any barn full of animals.

Favorite thing to do at the fair? It's a process....first thing is show up at the opening ceremony (do they still do that?) because it's an all day process, check out all the cows, check out the sheep & watch them get sheared, get some of that funky fresh milk in the cow barn, hit the little red barn and get a close up of the farm animals, see all the fair craft entries, visit the arts & crafts exhibit from APS and be amazed by all the young talent out there, for sure see the train exhibit, and hit the Spanish Village for some serious grubbin's and a nice cold one, and later hit the Indian Village for more delicious food, not to mention a look at some incredible dancers and costumes from Central & South America, as well as the locals', and finally, just sit on a park bench and watch everyone else enjoy themselves as well. Oh, and the parade!!!
