Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

So this post got me thinking. Who are the most important people in ABQ's art world?

Oh - I second this, Rudolfo!

I'd like to cast a posthumous vote for Vivian "Ethel Mertz" Vance, who made a name for herself at the Albuquerque Little Theater!

Funny...but not quite what I was getting at, Paul!

I nominate our own Spring Griffin, who chooses every last piece of art that graces the walls of every Flying Star and Satellite. I've discovered so many artists I never would have known about if it wasn't for her. I believe she gives local artists the biggest opportunity for exposure in all of Albuquerque.

Suzanne Sbarge (516) for sure, Don and Pamela Michaelis (collectors guide and fundraisers), Susan McAllister (Harwood), Guillermo Figueroa (NMSO), Tom Guralnick (Outpost), Cathy L. Wright (Abq Museum). what we need is mega patrons, think million dollar gifts or more.

Good point.

Who are the largest arts patrons in Albuquerque, besides the city?

Paul Allen? But he's mostly Seattle. I heard he owns buildings and funds things here... or something?

How are we defining important arts people? Patronage? National and international connections/fame? Influence? Scope of private collections? Visual arts only? Featured in international shows like the Venice Biennale?

For whatever it is worth, before I ever moved here, I was aware of Tamarind. That was the only Albuquerque arts venue my friends working in the arts would reference when I mentioned moving here - of course, these were people who were heavily into the LA lithography and contemporary arts scene - folks who worked with Sam Francis, Gemini G.E.L., the Broad Foundation and other heavy hitters. Based on that, I still consider Tamarind to have iconic status here, even in the post June Wayne era.

It seems not so much a central part of the arts scene here now, at least from what I can tell on this website. True? The reputation outside Albuquerque is still strong, though...I'm curious as to what others in the know think about this.

So...Marjorie Devon, Director of Tamarind, might make the list. Patrick Nagatani for sure. Does Belen count as Albuquerque? If so, surely Judy Chicago qualifies.

Back in the day, Fay Abrams (founder of Mariposa) and her husband amassed quite a collection of craft and art by local artists - I don't know if they are still actively collecting.

UNM Hospital has a pretty nice art collection featuring many local artists, IMO. If you count all of the UNM holdings, I suspect their collection might rival or even surpass the city's - especially when you consider what is in the Tamarind archives.

Take my musings for whatever you think they are worth - I'm way out of my area of expertise here...
