Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

So this post got me thinking. Who are the most important people in ABQ's art world?

What about Mary Ann Weems?

excellent points. i was thinking of who is responsible of getting major art in front of the abq audience. tamarind is should be on that list, although i think their influence is more on artists rather than the audience for art (at least in the primary sense) and you're right UNM probably does have a better collection than the ABQ museum (sorry, i think their holdings are pretty mediocre).

judy chicago is one of our most important artists in the area, but she lays low and doesn't drive the scene much. quite frankly she's alienated a lot of the local arts community.

McCune Foundation should be on the list as one of the major funders in the area.

weems gallery? fine for decorating i suppose but as for adding to the cannon of art...

Weems Art Gallery is not a decorater depot...they carry many fine, emerging & established talented local artists ...this gallery also gives back to the Albuquerque community through the Weems International ArtFest each year which raises thousands of dollars for many charities simultaneously.

I think we define powerful in all the ways you mentioned, BB, but not limited to visual arts only. In my estimation, powerful means that when these people talk, we listen to what they have to say. They help make policy and influence what we see, buy, experience, etc. in the art world in ABQ.

Kelly - I would think Susan McAllister as well (if she hasn't already been mentioned). Harwood has expanded the options for creativity on so many levels - from art studios to classes to nonprofit projects, even the art in the downtown area that was done through their facility's direction. Besides, have you ever been there around lunch time when they're baking bread? That ought to be worth points all on its own!

Any theater/dance people? We've got some ideas for music and visual arts.

Eva Encinias-Sandoval for her work at UNM and for founding the internationally recognized National Institute of Flamenco Arts and its annual Festival. Joaquin Encinias for his work with Yjastros the American Flamenco Repertory Company.

I would have to say Soledad Hindi and Las Meganenas. A most extraordinary group of women!

I think there are always some patrons no one has ever heard of who have houses like galleries stocked with tons of local art. I have a client who is one such collector, Dr. Jonathon Abrahms- cheers to all the quirky unassuming collectors of Albuquerque!

Ivy - Jon was mentioned in two other posts above - the Abrams collection is somewhat well-known locally, I think.
