Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

It happens every few days- in the distance there is a sound, bells... musical bells, becoming louder. Down the hall I hear the cry: "Ice-cream man! ice-cream-man!" I run to the door, grabbing my ice-cream response kit ($20 and a bag to carry 8 sno-cones home in) and hit the streets. The ice cream truck is an ellusive beast- always one street over, easily startled. I've pursued him on foot, bicycle, and automobile, but he usually manages to escape.

Last time I made the catch, my wife and I were walking near Laurel Park- I chased him on foot halfway to San Mateo on Trumbull before he pulled over. He comes and goes like a stealth bomber in the night- sudden, out of nowhere, and gone before it's even possible to respond. There's still a month of summer and our reserves are depleted.

Fixers, especially in Ridgecrest, how do you get the beast to stop? I'm thinking about remote control caltrops, but would prefer to implement the more humane catch and release policy if at all possible.

A source for actual sno-cones (as opposed to shaved ice) would also be useful. Thanks!

BB, we used to catch the palleta on Atlantic when we were working on the houses and he would charge us $1.50.

If we flagged the same guy down when we were at the Rio Grande Triangle Dog Park, he would charge us $2.00 each...

Brendan - Tough luck about the ice cream guy. Must not be the same one who plays Greensleeves at top volume while driving 2 miles per hour. Just wanted to add - I like the way you write, you're funny!

Thanks Laura. If things don't shape up soon I'll have to resort to a craig's list or soldier of fortune.

Have you thought about a EMP device? Nice coil in the road you can activate a large elctromagnetic pulse through or perhaps just one of those wild game tracking radio collars manage to tag the truck and then watch it on the telemetry receivers.

build a website with current icecream locations updated in real time via gps data.

I grew up on the "Sno-Cone Lady", personally. I haven't seen much of her...I hope she's making enough for her gas bill. But I know that since they moved Parks & Rec she has been coming less and less to our neighborhood except early Fall / Late Spring.

I saw an ad for driving a ice cream truck on the paper. So yes they have a hard time keeping drivers. Pays 10 per hour.
