It may be a little early, but does any one know of any Day of the Dead celebrations in the area? Parades in the South Valley? Processions?

I saw a flier at the co-op saying the SV marigold parade was Nov 1. Do we have more than 1 parade? Also where can we get the sugar skulls and other things for our ofrendas? Any ideas?

Here's another event from the Rainbow Artist collective:
"November 2, 2008: Dia de Los Muertos reception at South Broadway Cultural Center. Rainbow Artists will again present an ofrenda this year."

I have re-checked my mailing from those responsible for organizing the Marigold Parade in the South Valley - La Raza Unida and Cambio Inc. The date is definately Sunday, Nov. 2. As stated in the flyer:

16th Annual South Valley
Dia De Los Muertos
Marigold Parade
Sunday, Nov. 2nd
4-8pm
2008 Recession Procession
Muerte a los Corporaciones

Parade starts at the Bernalillo Sheriff's Sub Station (Isleta & Centro Familiar)
and proceeds to the Westside Community Center 1250 Isleta SW
for Music, Altars, Food and Art Vendors

Come in your best calavera attire!

from me: Please be aware that this is a South Valley event (like the burning of KooKooee on Oct. 26) and has its own culture and politics. SV culture is vibrant, unique and rarely found on the Internet (no websites for these events). I love these festivals and wouldn't miss them, but am always aware that I am a guest at the party. See you there!

Phew, I have another week to try to work out how to paint a white dog black without using toxic paints!

You don't need paint, just a make super hero style cape with skulls on for the little darlin'.

The Mexican Consulate (on 4th Street NW) in years past has often displayed stunning ofrendas in the lobby...
