This band is one of the most whacky and entertaining we have ever produced. I challenge you to watch the videos below and not agree!
The magnificently indefinable Asylum Street Spankers stand as one of the America's most distinctive groups. Defiantly acoustic, fiercely independent, and absurdly good, the Spankers began in 1994 at a party in Llano, Texas and since then have kept the all-night sing-along, anything-goes spirit of their inception alive. They've pushed their ever-evolving group from simple country-blues revivalism toward smart, challenging music of boundless variety, sophisticated arrangements, stunning showmanship, and determined inventiveness.
Founding their own label, Spanks-a-Lot Records, in 1999, the band has built an international audience without the aid of the corporate music industry. Continuing to tour throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, the Spankers are now a world-reknowned underground institution and one of the planet’s most distinctive musical acts.
"One of the best live acts you are likely to see anywhere, and any true fan of music would be a fool to miss them. Their effect on audiences is positively awe inspiring."
—Chris Davis, The Memphis Flyer
"Sets the benchmark for 21st century acoustic roots music. Not unlike the result of combining the ideology and artistry of Willie Dixon, Woody Guthrie, Loius Jordan, Frank Zappa, Lefty Frizzel, Bill Hicks, Rosemary Clooney, The Beatles, Zimmerman, Robert Johnson, Spike Jones, Phil Ochs, Brian Wilson, The Fugs, and friggin' Betty Boop!!"
—Beardo, Folkwax
