Driving down San Pedro last night, I noticed this new restaurant at the (doomed?) corner of San Pedro & Candelaria. It's in the spot where the Daily Grind used to be, facing Candelaria.
I am always intrigued by more French food in town (still mourning the passing of the French Corner), and was curious if anyone had any scoop, or had tried it yet...
My husband and I tried it for brunch today, it was very good. This week is their "soft opening" so their credit/debit machine was not hooked up yet ( which was fine, we had cash ) and the two owners as well as the chef and the waiter asked for our opinions, which was nice. Their was a slight mix up with the two orders, the waiter handed my order to my husband and vice versa but since we thought everything on the menu sounded good, we did not mind.
The menu has a couple of soups ( onion and soup of the day ) as well as Salad Nicoise and 2 kinds of quiche. Crepes are available savory ( chicken, ham and cheese, turkey, and shrimp are what I remember ) and sweet ( strawberry was one, not sure about the others) and a full espresso coffee menu although no cafe au lait. Pastries were typical...croissants, scones ( made by daily grind), and what my husband said was delicious banana bread.
I hope it does well!
Was surprised to see Dagmars was gone as well as Roscoe's ( which I don't think ever did well. Robb's was Robb's)
Our waiter said their tentative closed day was Sunday ( I hope they change that as I think they could pull the after church crowd ) and they are still playing with the menu. Owner and chef very nice. Crepes cooked right out front.
It's not our side of town, what happened to French Corner?

Great review, Barbara--thanks for being a crepe guinea pig! (Hard work, I know!)
The French Corner closed about a year ago after having transferred ownership several years ago. The prior owners recently opened a cafe in Santa Fe called Clafoutis, rumored to be quite good.
NOT true; the building is empty. However, I just found a spiffy little French cafe downtown today. The owner/baker/chef used to work for the first owners of Le French Corner before they sold it to Anne-Laure and Philipe Ligier. This one is in that little plaza-type area that used to be 4th St. between Tijeras and Copper.: 401-A Copper NW I could've dived right in to the bread and pastry counters and died happy! It's called La Quiche. I also DON'T KNOW how Richardson's photo got on MY reply!!! Help! Help! Help!
La Quiche is as good as you will find and as close to authentic "French" pastry you will find in Albuquerque. Go early if you can, often they sell out of items in the AM. It's next to the 7-Eleven of all things.
I ate there (Pierre) today. I had a chicken salad which was the special, but I wish it was a permanent menu item, it was so good. The chicken was very succulent and spiced with rosemary, and I think thyme. The salad was presented beautifully, with perfectly cut tomatoes, eggs and black olives and the chicken over baby greens with a wonderful homemade ranch dressing, and a light dusting of parsley over everything. Really good! Ill return for sure.
My friends and I at La Crepe Pierre recently, wonderful crepes, quiche, coffee, and dessert crepes. I hear they are working on getting a beer & wine license!
