Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Over the last couple of days ( over night? ) some new additions have been made along Central Avenue to the sidewalks.

What I would like to know is this classified as graffiti or is it advertising? If it is advertising where do I get a permit? I have some things I would like to write on the sidewalk. Some of this has appeared at bus stops. Is it part of the new ad package / free bus stop shelter program?

I know I'm not going to win any friends by commenting on this (blaspheme?).

It's amusing, isn't it, the way local TV picks up so many stories from this site.

I kind of suspected that we agreed with each other. I saw the piece on KOAT and was really appalled.

Just a follow up. Most of these have been washed away, did it rain? Though several persist beyond NobHill traveling East.

Has anyone seen any response from the City about chalked messages in general?

I support your view. This is just another example of how Christians think they're above everything. I don't want to see this mess when I'm walking or driving around the city.

I personally giggled unmercifully when I saw a modification to this at Yale and Central:

I'm not sure, but I think the city might have some issues with urine and feces, just as public health is regarded. Also, the sodomy might come under fire for archaic and ludicrous obscenity charges. Call first, and if they're fine with it, go for it.

I live down town and totally saw a group of taggers in the act maybe 11pm may 5th on coal ave. I was hanging out on my patio when I saw them swooping down tagging everything- even Gertrude Zachary's moving truck!

They looked like nice kids so I silently cheered them on. Isnt there a hotline I can call in the event I do want to turn them in?

In what I consider to be somewhat related news, very big-deal anonymous street artist Banksy has been tagging buildings in NYC lately. The owners are now in the weird position of having to decide what to do -- what happens when the graffiti on the wall is worth more than the building it graces?

One woman has (rumor has it) sold the painting and thrown the house in for free.

Graffiti can be art, depending on the aesthetic criteria. Banksy is a great example of how a graffiti artist can invoke social change. Unfortunately, graffiti is usually just vandalism in Albuquerque.
