Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

How many more senseless deaths must NM endure in service to poorly thought out mass transit? Another notch in the Rail Runner's caboose. Though this one appears to be a suicide, the line's kill-to-passenger ratio seems disturbingly high.

We need to stop the madness. Now.

Why would they set traps for those folks? What are we, heathens? Anyway, I'm sure the Police Stations ge enough complaints about cops trying to fill their quotas. I think the reason people are so anal and paranoid about these traffic lights is because they record for hours and are kept on file. If they have to review some tape, they can always go back and watch you tail gate. I'm sure that's opening a whole other can of worms but...eh, whatever.

But you're right. Those numbers are outrageous. Imagine how many lives we could save through mass transport. Even if one rail runner a year failed and randomly exploded, it wouldn't even be a fraction of the numbers we have today; thousands less would die or be maimed each and every year.

I hate to say it but Natural Selection does still operate in the modern world... No matter how hard you try, you can't prevent idiocy.

Apparently we are, if our only way out is suicide by Rail Runner. Also, if we need to build enormous bridges over the rail road tracks to enhance the hideously loud warnings blasted by the speakers on the lights and the whistle on the trains and to enhance the road-blockage that are those arms that will dent your hood when you go under them...Then yes, we as 'Querqians kind of deserve to be called fragile.

Oh GOD, I might have to pass through one of the tracks today to get to the Celtic Festival from where I live. Think I should go? What are my chances of survival?

On my way to and from horseback riding in the South Valley we frequently see the Rail Runner. On several occasions there have been some really stupid people who try to get under those bar things that come down to block the path. One bar nearly came down straight onto a truck once. And just the other day a truck tried to turn when the train was ALREADY passing. It was right at the bar things and the train was right in front of it. Nearly gave my mum a heart attack.

I see you live next to the petroglyphs... I know you'll be mooing when you start coughing up your tax money for Suncal profits. Oh wait, I forgot the right is in favor of corporate subsidies... just not subsidies that actually help the public.

Oil companies get millions of dollars in gov't subsidies... part of the reason they roll in billion dollar profits... not exactly "pulling oneself up by the bootstraps".

The train isn't a business... its a governmental mass transit project that has many payoffs beside strictly monetary figures. Its exactly the kind of service our tax money should be going to... not exactly a vast left-wing conspiracy going on here.

And yet they still manage to get people like yourself to donate their free time with PR efforts... bless your heart. They provide a needed product because there are not more trains and public transportation options.

I guess the government should put a moratorium on all good ideas until its been found that a corporation is invested in a similar effort... the free market is the answer to all our problems right? Recommended reading for Mark... The Shock Doctrine.

"It is perhaps the stupidist governmental boondoggle I've seen, and that's saying something."

It would be interesting if you could actually provide a thoughtful list of points as to why you believe this.

Funny to ask for a thoughtful list of points from a guy whose faith is based on a list others' beliefs.

You're still missing the bigger issue: gas prices are heavily subsidized by the government (meaning your tax payer dollars). You said you want no subsidies on anything. Great, but you can expect gas prices to go much higher than the, what is it now, $3.50/gallon now?

I don't know about you, but a train is starting to look pretty nice to me right about now.

I spoke with an Uncle over the weekend who has worked as a project manager for BP oil for the last 25 years. He tells me to expect $10/gallon gas prices as early as 2010, "The writing is on the wall", says he.

That's gonna be a real zinger for us car lovin' americans!

I'm already phasing my car out. I'm hoping that by riding the bus more the transit system will get better and/or faster. If they want me to enjoy it, the bus on Lomas better start coming more often than "as I feel like it" and more consistent to some kind of schedule other than the ones gang-banged.
