I am new to Albuquerque and I am looking for an out-of-the-ordinary fabric store. Can you tell me about any fabric stores (other than JoAnns, Hancock, etc.) or really any other unique crafting stores in the area? Anything you'd tell a newbie about?
Thanks!
Forget about unique fabric stores in ABQ....you will have to go through withdrawal just like the rest of us that moved here from somewhere that had fantastic fabric stores. There was one in SF, at San Busco Plaza, beautiful stuff but $$$$. Sorry to break this dismal news to you it to you.
Alas, the choice of fabric stores in ABQ is limited. However, if you are in Taos, do not miss "Uncommon Threads" just a bit north of the plaza area. It's worth the trip! Take plenty of cash though, it's not inexpensive, but your senses will appreciate the experience.
Jill-- there is a quilt shop on Juan Tabo and Menaul, next to Harbor Freight that is pretty nice. They have all the great designers and they are really helpful. Other than that, nothing. I am forced to order Amy Bulter by the bolt and then I sell what I don't use on etsy. If I could only find a reliable partner I'd open a hip craft shop in town-- there is really a place for that in this city and we have NOTHING like it.
I went to the quilt store on Juan Tabo & Menaul this weekend. I was pleasantly suprised - I thought they had a good selection. Better than the mainstream stores, anyway. They had some Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, Free Spirit, and lots of moda fabrics. It was definately not the kind of quilt store I am use to. Check it out if you haven't already.
Bernina has some fabric, but they are some crusty old biddies and usually rude (in my experience). Really, uncommon threads in toas is your best bet. Also the fabric store in santa fe is friendly with some funky and modern prints.
the other thing i do is go to thrift town. they have a great linens section and i pick up old printed sheets and whatnot for 2 or 3$. its good when you really have to have a project and you don't really have any money.
The annual Roadrunner Shop Hop is happening this week. This is a great way to find out about eight fabric stores in Albuquerque and northern NM. I went last year and it was really fun! I would love to go this year, but unfortunately I cannot.
I think everyone here hit on all the "cool" stores for the most part. For all of those hip fabrics, your best bet is probably online. Quilt Works does have some pretty hip fabric, as does the Santa Fe store. I was impressed with Southwest Decoratives. I expected that store to be entirely southwestern fabric, but they had some unique things that I didn't find in any other store.
The Taos quilting store is pretty lame, but Common Threads is awesome! They have a lot of foreign fabric offerings, but so so expensive. =(
