Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Hi, I'm fairly new to Albuquerque and am looking for a place to live while I'm in grad school. But I'm having a heck of a time finding a home in the UNM or downtown area that will allow a medium-sized dog.

Any advice on good dog-friendly landlords or (centrally located) parts of town? Or is looking for a space around $800 month for two adults and a dog in these areas just unrealistic? I'm not all that picky, but would like a fenced yard and at least a large one bedroom, preferably two.

I've been searching for over a month now, so any advice would be great. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the unm & down town markets, check out the neighborhoods along rio grande blvd. you may have to take a ride to one of these areas. or go to some park with your dog , where there are other dogs and people and ask them. or go to some dog adoptions and ask people there, my advice would be to escalate your inquiries and to look in some of the more. rural areas, abq is a rural town, if you drive west on central and go north when you intersect rio grande blvd you are in the old town/rio grande blvd neighborhood/corridor. i would also recommend making sure that your dog is well trained and tired when you go to check out an apt., take your dog with you to show the owner that your dog is well behaved and won't destroy or devalue their property, good luck, joe.

I had luck finding my place through Craigslist. I also know a few firends that have found dog-friendly places with large yards around UNM/nob hill/downtown through there.

Here's one I came across

I had the best luck (with my 2 medium/lg pups) posting to craigslist under "housing wanted", that way people who contacted me (about ten different potentials! pretty good, i thought) knew what to expect, both about me and about my having dogs. Nothing worse than starting out cold rental calls with "would you consider a dog?", bc there's no point finding out more if it's a hard and fast no.

I found some ABQ landlords hesitant due to past bad experiences, one wanted to make two surprise visits to check out the house in a month or two to see how the dogs "really were". But overall, if they like you and find you trustworthy, and have the opportunity to meet your dog, I think you'd have luck.

Especially posting yourself to housing wanted is good bc people who aren't sure whether they want to rent out that empty house or what, can become inspired to do so if they like what you post. Maybe in the slow real estate market too, people would be more apt to rent a place out for a year or two, since it may not sell in that time anyway?

I've rented a couple of times from Maddox and Co., which manages many properties around UNM, Downtown and points between, and they allowed my dogs. The tradeoff with dog-friendly rentals is often you have to put up with sort of dumpy apartments and rental houses, something I did for years.

It is a little hard to find somthing for $800 in the UNM area. I'm a Realtor and I did a search for you in the downtown and UNM area and only a few came up so I expanded my search for you to rentals that are close to UNM or close to The freeway so that your drive will not be that far I also had to expanded my search to 1k to see what all would come up. I personally do not do property management but I am sending you a list of homes that are for rent. If you cut and past the below link in your address bar they should come up. if they dont come up for some reason you can always email me at mandy@ltreg.com or call me at 550-5697.
the home for rent on 6601 St. Josephs Ave NW Albuquerque, is one of my offices rental properties and I have personally seen it and it is completely updated and is minutes away from I-40, $900/month, washer and dryer included. I can talk to the office manager to see if pets are acceptable. It does have a decent size back yard for a medium size dog. Any how I hope this information has been a little bit of help to you.

I would suggest looking in the South Valley. We have lived down here for two years (we just bought a house in the area a year ago). It is very easy to find dog friendly rentals and places with fenced yards. Its not that far from UNM (it takes me no more than 15 minutes to make it to campus) if you pick a location close to Central or Bridge. The rent is reasonable and it should be easy to find a place for $800 or less a month.

Hi!

I know a wonderful realtor in NM who is very awesome and reliable, and wonderfully dog friendly. She has multiple properties around Carlisle and beautiful house in Ridgecrest that I rented from her.
Her name is LaMaia Cramer, she just opened her own business office in Nob Hill, if you'd like to send me a private comment I'll send you her email and phone.
I believe her properties on carlisle are under 700.

Big apartment complex on 6th and Lead downtown. Walk to the niteclubs. No yard, but patios and balconies and green areas for the dogs. They've even taken in very nice pit bulls before.
