Carnitas Anyone?

I know this is NEW Mexico. And I love green chile stew, really. And posole, and sopaipillas (well, the ones at Richard's anyway). But I took me awhile to find "real" carnitas -- Taqueria Mexicano on Lomas. If you've tried it, and know what I'm talking about, are there other restaurants you can recommend? Charlie's didn't work for me, and one restaurant who said "Yes, we can make it for you" served another bogus pork dish, so if it's not on the menu I don't ask anymore. The "Karnitas" burritos at Garcia's aren't bad, but why do they spell it that way?

Again, check out the South Valley. I think they have carnitas at El Paisa on Bridge just over the river and at El Comedor on Isleta between Bridge & Rio Bravo, as well as quite a few other places in the vicinity. I believe Kathy's Carry-out (on Isleta just south of bridge) offers a NM version of carnitas as well. (I'm not a carnitas fan, so I could be wrong). The "Karnita's" at Garcias sported a little trademark symbol until a few years ago. i think they were trying to brand them as a Garcia's product for the NM market, the same way the taquitos at Steak in the Rough used to (and still may for all I know) be called "taquitas" and carry a trademark.

Have you tried the little hidden place called

Los Equipales
4500 Silver Ave Se
Albuquerque, NM 87108
(505) 265-1300

I had some darn tasty Carnitas there!

Tried it today, thanks. Tasty, yes, but not what I have in mind. It was cubed, in a green chile sauce. At Taqueria Mexicano, and every place I ever had it in Los Angeles, it was semi-shredded and juicy, but no sauce. If I were a cook (or a Mexican) I could probably describe the flavors. The texture is "right" at El Modelo, but the red sauce is "wrong".
