Profile Information

Where I Live:
Student Ghetto
About Me:
I'm a weird combo of skinhead, arts professional, and class war enthusiast.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
Food; views; space; my neighborhood; locals & newcomers that respect the locals
Relationship Status:
Married
What I'm Reading:
Seems like it took the whole summer, but I read Robert Kee's The Green Flag: A History of Irish Nationalism. In fact, it did take all summer. But I'm glad that I stuck with it. I really ended up with it because I wanted to do a reading unit on the Irish War for Independence and their Civil War, but I was having a hard time finding books on the topic, frankly. But I read it, it was great. Enough of that: I'll read the other related books I got later!

Now I'm onto a unit about the history of calendars. I wanted initially to address the fallacy I was taught growing up in a Protestant school, that the Romans actually numbered their years in descending order, and that everyone knew something BIG was coming in year zero, but no one knew what, and that thing was Christ. Ummm...that's just not true. But that's what happens when the parochial school puts fallacious dogma ahead of factual education. So now I'm just finishing up Marking Time: The Quest to Invent the Perfect Calendar by Duncan Steel, an exhaustive history of the calendar we generally use today in the West. To be followed by Mapping Time: The Calendar and its History by E.G. RIchards (may have some overlap I'll skip through, but has a broader net across calendars the world over), and then Tony Aveni's Empires of Time: Calendars, Clocks, and Cultures, which will focus much more on the calendars of the Pre-Columbian civilizations.

BTW, the answer on that "Everybody knew something was coming because they were running out of years" bullshit: the Roman world didn't number years consecutively at all, neither forward nor backward (duh), they counted time in a cellular form based on the reign of emperors. So monuments or documents would be dated "In the 4th year of the Reign of Vaspasian" or something. Once again, thanks for nothing, Right Wing Nutjob College Drop-Out Christian School Teachers! Try reading a book next time.
What I'm Listening To:
David Bowie's 1990's albums, Against Me! And my usual, old school Oi! as well as newer bands like Anti Heros, Hard Skin, and Guttersnipe; Tossers & other Paddy Punk; the Men they Couldn't Hang, the disk Ted sent me. Stuff.

Tracks/Traces/Vestiges - Paintings by Deborah Donelson

Deborah Donelson has maybe been better known as a printmaker during her years here in New Mexico, but in fact she has been as much or more a creator of paintings and drawings. Indeed, Deborah's signature works on paper are individual watercolors built on frameworks of etching or gravure prints. She has had several successful shows of her prints in… Continue

(Gus) Wagner's (Farm) -- the current Center of My Life

Growing up, the fall lineup of family activities included the occasional trip out to Gus Wagner's to buy squash, corn, and (if I remember) apple cider. As a kid, I hated doing things with my family, so I hated Gus Wagner's. But now that I'm a grownup (bonk, bonk on the head! bonk-bonk! bonk-bonk!), and these days I work in Corrales about half a mile from there. Gus Wagner's, now just called Wagner'… Continue

The Magic that is Coroplast

This was a question from someone I work for, sort of 1 step removed, passed along from another person in his professional circle. I thought it would be a good idea for a quick and easy blog post about storage materials. I did ask my colleague first, before I put this together, and I expanded just slightly, as well. Q: Here is a question from MM: Should interior surfaces of an archive/storage… Continue

Cool! My father is pretty well known in the art community. Your partner also an artist? I am a graphic artist (computer) as I have kind of carried on the artistic legacy my dad has started.

Hello,
Not quite sure how this all works. Do we all ready know each other and I don't know it? I guess i am all for transparency, maybe I am too transparent, and these sites lend themselves to not quite so much>
Now I.ve just read your march 13 th post so I think I might know you so of course I'll add you ( or do you add me? ) I really don't know how all this works. And if you are not who I think you are then ?? Like I said I find this all very confusing but I did meet an old client on this and that was cool.
Adios, dlc

You and the Mariposa folks are so sweet. Adela was the one who first told me about the UNM Print Sale and every year I look on the UNM website around November/December and every year I can't find the date...until after the sale is over. I'll just keep an eye out this year and see if I can ferret out the date before the Print Sale happens. Glad you have some good finds from past years, I'm all green with envy.
