Re-reading Anthony Barrett's "Caligula." He uses archeological, textual, and even numismatic evidence to argue Caligula wasn't he despot later generations made him out to be. Flawed, yes; spoiled rotten, certainly; but also perhaps the victim of serious bad press imposed by a successor who needed to assure Rome of his own legitimacy, and who was abbetted by squadrons of sycophantic senators with a real interest in making themselves look better than they'd actually acted during Caligula's reign.
Barrett also has a winning study of Livia, Augustus's maligned wife.
What I'm Listening To:
My instincts
"ridin" as in "ridin gaijin," a username referring to my motorcycle tour of Japan, as well as a feeling of wanting to remain an outsider (gaijin) and to keep a traveling sort of mentality (eyes open, seeing everything freshly) wherever I go. :-)
Spring Break...I went to Connecticut and got my Tiger back. You can read the ride report and view the utterly numerous pictures on advrider.com, here. Enjoy!
It's a combination of professional and personal interest: I'm born and raised here in NM, I'm an archaeologist, and I really love to eat. Have fun as you check out local traditional foods...let me know if you ever take the plunge and try that morcilla.
