Planning a move to ABQ with my HUSBAND sometime within the next year and a half. We cannot wait!
I currently teach 9th grade English in the Philadelphia suburbs. There are days when I love my job, and days when I want to tear my hair out...so it's like every other occupation. I'm not sure if I want to continue teaching when I reach the Burque...any thoughts on this would be very welcome! I might want to look into a whole new career. I love art, and being creative, but I have never been sure of what to do with this!
I love my husband Justin. I love my dog Freyja. I LOVE walking and running...it brings me peace. I know I am going to love Albuquerque!

yeah, when i bought my home one insurer would not insure me because i had a dobermann, the dog in the foreground, she passed this year, her name was Clarice, she was going on 13, pretty good for that breed, anyhow, take care.
hi maureen, i do work at the rio grande zoo. i just moved here july of 2007 and have been a zookeeper for about ten years now. like you there are great days and challenging days at work. i would suggest, since you have some time, trying to get some practical experience working with animals before changing careers. just a love of animals usually isn't enough and jobs in animal related fields are typically low-paying and hard to come by. volunteering at shelters, wildlife rehab centers, vet offices or your local zoo are usually the best way to get an acurate idea of the job. that being said, you may also consider looking into an education based position since you have that background. most zoological/conservation organizations do educational outreach programs. hope this info helps a little...congratulations on your upcoming wedding and good luck making it out west.
Great! I'll be doing some lecturing at U Penn starting in September on Mondays. I hope to get to Philadelphia for a few weekends if possible - I'll keep you posted!
My neighborhood is called Barelas. You can do a google search for
Barelas,NM and you'll come up with several results.
There are also several other DCFers that live in the neighborhood and there are several discussions about it here on the board.
The ultra quick history is that it's located in downtown Albuquerque, just south of Central Ave and runs to Bridge/Ceasar Chavez Ave. I forget exactly what our Western most border is right now. It's a beautiful 500 year old neighborhood, the original road from Mexico City to Santa Fe runs directly through it.
It and the hulking Deco train yard are a big part of Albuquerque's history of the last 100 years. Today the neighborhood is a wonderful mix of young professionals, families with small children and families who have been in the neighborhood for generations. The socio economic levels are diverse as well. It's labeled as an up and coming area in many respects, though to be honest i love it just the way it is.
It's a pleasant walk to all downtown attractions from my front door, including a movie theater, several wonderful places to eat and drink, the Civic Plaza and the train and bus stations. I love it because I lived in major cities prior to moving to ABQ and I enjoy the semi-urban feel of the area.
The neighborhood is also close to I-35 and my drive to my office in the north east heights takes about 15 minutes on a bad day. My drive home is closer to 20 if I take the highway and a little quicker on the surface streets. Oh, and I'm a short skip to the community college and UNM.
Some people will be quick to tell you that downtown is a dangerous place. If you've lived in a large east coast Urban city, which I have, and it looks like you have too, you'll probably find the local notion of "dangerous" to be nothing like what you're used to.
I walk alone here frequently and I've never had any trouble. My house has never been vandalized in this neighborhood, nor has my car, and I spent time in my yard and on my porch and I'm never harassed. I also frequent bars in downtown and have for years. If you've got even a small lick of street smarts (which I'm sure you do) You'll be fine.
if you've got specific questions about this 'hood please let me know.
Hi Maureen - welcome to Duke City Fix! I've sent a friend request in hopes we might have a private conversation. I'll be working in Philadelphia this fall - perhaps we could exchange Philadelphia and Albuquerque living tips?
