Albuquerque
About Me:
You can read my perspectives on m-pyre...a group blog I share with Mikaela and Maggie. I also write for the New Mexico Independent. On the more frivolous side, I love to snow ski and am always looking for partners. I wheel and deal in antique/vintage quilts, and usually have around 60 on hand. If you ever want to check them out let me know...I love to show them off. Other things I enjoy are photography, good fiction, wine bars and coffee shops. Oh, and Duke City Fix of course.

Arlington West this Tuesday, April 15th, at the Guild!

The Youth Rights Group at the SouthWest Organizing Project is showing this film at the Guild on Tuesday night, April 15th. Arlington West is about Iraq soldiers, over a 100 of them, who were interviewed in transit to and from Iraq. One of the primary focus areas… Continue

Insider Politics: Bernalillo County Lobbyist goes to Bat for SunCal

Local media outlets have been up in arms about the massive dollars that public agencies spend on “hired gun” lobbyists to get money out of the State legislature. And it's true--it’s a pretty outrageous system we have for divvying up our public dollars.

Larry Barker of Channel 13 did a

Reforming the TIDD Gravy Train...Make that call!

While we're debating presidential elections and hashing the movies, the State Legislative Session is in full swing and many New Mexicans are only thinking about the many issues currently being debated at the Roundhouse. One of them is particularly dear to my heart.

Today House Bill 451 is being heard in the House Judiciary Committee at 1:30pm. HB 451 is a bill that would reform the state TIDD legislation, wh

Challenging Albuquerque's Penchant for Corporate Welfare

There's a huge debate raging just under the radar in Albuquerque at the moment, about what amounts to massive corporate tax subsidy schemes called TIDDs. You can read about TIDDs here, here, and here...some of which w… Continue

I love quilts. One of these days I'm going to carve out some time to actually learn how to make them. (That'll happen in about 16 years.) We should get together sometime to talk TIDDS, development. By the way, twice now I've tried to set up my blogger blog to accept comments and for whatever reason (I'm a moron?) I haven't been able to make it work. After the last time, I just accepted that if anyone has a burning need to comment, they can just email me. Anyway, if you ever want to get together, drop me an email.

hi Marjorie,
the reading group was kind of a bust. Only one person showed up and we just ended up hanging out and chatting. But it was worth a shot...And I was happy to re-read the book. By the way, I've been obsessing over TIDDs lately, talking with Gabriel Nims and some other folks. Hey, as an aside: Do you know how to quilt yourself?

hi Marjorie,
I'm so grateful for your posts on growth, lobbyists, TIDDs, etc. I often start to comment and then realize I'm just about to post a rant. So glad to know you're out there.

Yeah... well its encouraging to know that there are conscious voices out there. Don't let the apparent silence keep you from posting those great pieces. It can be disheartening when the frivolous gets everyone gabbing and on the really important stuff people hold their tongues.

Meanwhile the telecoms were granted retroactive immunity for spying on Americans and it grabbed a paragraph on page 3 of the Journal... the race is truly not for the swift but who can endure... keep it up, we need it.

Thanks Marjorie... would like to see your smiling face on here too! ;-)

(Settling for the real thing in a few weeks is more than enough, though!)
